FAQ --  Rangetop -- Installation

Dishwasher Drawer Matching IKEA Finishes Rangetop Modification Tip Out Tray Windowseat/Bench Edge Banding

Q. Has anyone installed a rangetop or cooktop in an IKEA cabinet?
A. Yes!
RobinG reused her existing cooktop in a 36" base cabinet, and was able to use the top drawers.  Here's how she did it:

Care was taken to ensure the electrical was situated behind the cabinet and an access hole was cut.  The drawer divider for the 30"/36" base cabinet was cut down on the top by about an inch to accommodate the depth of the cooktop, and the rest of the unit was assembled as per instructions.

This view shows L brackets installed on the cabinet side that support the cooktop cord so that it does not get caught in the drawers and drawer glides as they are moved in and out.  The top drawers will be used for shallow items so that there is no concern about items impacting the bottom of the cooktop.

Note:  In a 30" cabinet, a 30" shallow drawer front and drawer box (from HDO3080) can be substituted for the 2 narrower drawers, eliminating the need to cut down the middle divider.

Fairegold installed a new Viking rangetop along with a downdraft ventilation system.   Here are her words:

"The Viking works great because the depth of the rangetop was perfect. We cut down the 36" cabinet by 6" (size of a top drawer) and installed a heavy piece of plywood butt up inside the two sides. IOW, the cabinet is 36" wide, side to side. Inside is 1-1/2" inch less. Jim drilled holes for heavy duty screws into the sides to support the shelf. You may wish to add a cleat under it, if you want, but I don't
think it is necessary. We measured for the gas line, too.

Underneath, because we have a downdraft vent, we have one shelf halfway, that's cut with a big 10" deep swoop around the vent. The Ikea 24" tall doors fit just fine under the rangetop. Some brands of rangetop are deeper, and therefore you could not have the doors. I toyed with the idea, if I had not done the downdraft) of having the space under the rangetop open with the big beefy stainless steel shelves for pots and pans.

We love the Viking rangetop---it's my favorite thing in the kitchen!"

Thanks Fairegold!
