The IKEA Home Planner Software is a useful tool to help plan your kitchen, office and bedroom. Following is an index and explanation of some of the warnings that pop up to warn you of an error in your design, a potential conflict, or a dangerous situation. Read more to see images and explanations, including the relevant NKBA Guidelines when they are applicable.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 1Work aisle / walkway clearanceThis is a warning you get if you are trying to place cabinets closer together than 48". NKBA Guidelines suggest the working aisle should allow at least 42" for one cook, and 48" for two or more. The width of a walkway should be 36". For universal access, 42" should be allowed.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 2Cleanup / prep sink landing areaThis is a warning that appears if you are attempting to place the sink and cooktop closer together than 15". NKBA Guidelines recommend a cooktop landing space at least 15" x 16" on one side, and 12" x 15" on the other side of the cooktop. The suggested minimum landing space around a sink is 18" on one side and 24" on the other.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 3Cooking surface landing areaThis is a warning that appears if you are attempting to place the sink and cooktop closer together than 15". NKBA Guidelines recommend a cooktop landing space at least 15" x 16" on one side, and 12" x 15" on the other side of the cooktop.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 4Cooking surface clearanceThis is a warning you get when you are attempting to place the fan cabinet and/or ventilation closer than 26" for an electric cooktop or 30" for a gas cooktop. NKBA Guidelines require a minimum of 24" between a cooking surface and a NON-combustible surface above it, and 30" if the surface above is unprotected and/or combustible.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 5Faucet clearanceThis is a warning that appears if you are placing a sink and faucet below a window or a cabinet. NKBA Guidelines don't specify clearances, but common sense suggests that the frame of the window or cabinet door be situated at a height that would prevent collision with the faucet head when opened.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 6Cabinet next to wall This is a warning you get when placing a cabinet up against the wall. Although technically cabinets can be placed directly next to the wall, it is good practice to allow 2-3" of filler to prevent handles/knobs from hitting the wall. With a cabinet with drawers, it is important to allow for possible variations in the wall that might prevent a drawer from opening all the way.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 7Drawer in corner This is a warning that appears if you are placing a cabinet with drawers in an interior corner. Placing a cabinet with drawers in a corner without filler can cause conflicts between the opening of the drawer, and adjacent cabinet handles or knobs. Measure the depth of your chosen pulls to determine the amount of filler needed for clearance.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 8Oven clearanceThis is a warning that pops up if you are placing an oven directly next to a wall or a high cabinet / pantry without filler. NKBA Guidelines recommend that ovens placed next to the wall be placed in accordance with the appliance manufacturer's instructions or as per local building codes, which may not provide an adequate landing surface area.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 9Drawers next to oven This is a warning that appears if you are placing a base cabinet with drawers next to a cooktop. The concern here is that a child could use the drawers as steps to climb up onto the countertop or cooktop.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 10Oven placed in cornerThis is a warning that appears if you are placing an oven in an interior corner. An oven (or dishwasher for that matter) requires adequate filler between the appliance and the corner to allow for the appliance door to open without conflict with the cabinets adjacent.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 11Island secured to floorThis is a warning you get when creating an island cabinet arrangement. Because island cabinets are not secured to the wall like ordinary base cabinets, it is recommended that a base be built and the cabinets secured through the base to the floor.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 12Island secured to floorThis is a warning you get when creating an island cabinet arrangement. Because island cabinets are not secured to the wall like ordinary base cabinets, it is recommended that a base be built and the cabinets secured through the base to the floor.
IKEA Home Planner - Warning 14Clearance for PRAKTFULLThis is a popup that you get if you're designing with the PRAKTFULL range and/or NUTID ventilation hood. The PRAKTFULL range requires clearance on the sides of 20mm or approximately 3/4", and above the clearance requirement is 550mm or about 21". The NUTID hood requires 50mm or about 2" on either side. |
