Hinge Adjustment

Q. My doors are hanging all wonky...they don't line up right, nor do they look straight. There are small gaps on the left and right, but they're not even. Adjusting things all willy nilly doesn't seem to be helping. What can I do?

A. The hinges are Blum--they are adjustable in 3 directions. Start with patience and a Phillips Screwdriver and you'll be hanging fine in no time!
[BREAK=Height Adjustment]

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

This adjustment involves two screws, one to the top and one to the bottom of the clip. Loosen the screws slightly and then lift or lower the door until it is in the position you want. Re-tighten the screws to secure the door.

[BREAK=Depth Adjustment]

DEPTH ADJUSTMENT

Use this screw to adjust how far out or in the doors are in comparison to your cabinet and to the other cabinet doors and drawers surrounding it. Loosen the screw and manually push or pull the door to adjust it. Re-tighten the screw when the door is in the position you want.
[BREAK=Side to Side Adjustment]

SIDE TO SIDE ADJUSTMENT

Using a phillips head screwdriver, turn the adjustment screw clockwise and counterclockwise to move the door--the direction of turn and it's effect is dependent on which the side of the door the hinge is attached.

On a door with a RIGHT SIDE HINGE:
Turn the screw CLOCKWISE to move the door to the RIGHT.
Turn the screw COUNTERCLOCKWISE to move the door to the LEFT
On a door with a LEFT SIDE HINGE:
Turn the screw CLOCKWISE to move the door to the LEFT.
Turn the screw COUNTERCLOCKWISE to move the door to the RIGHT .
Now you should be all straight!

I've been blogged!
When you say left or right side hinge, do you mean when you're looking at the cabinet the door on the right is a right side hinge (right side of the cabinet) or the door on the right is a left side hinge (looking at the door)? For the hinge in the pictures, is that a right or a left hinge?

I'm spatial relationship challenged

If you hadn't asked I coulda told ya...

My first reaction is when looking at the cabinet, if they are on the right hand side then it's a right side hinge. But now you've got me second guessing myself. I'll have to go check... ::sigh::

Ok, I checked it and YES right hand hinge means the hinge on the right hand side of the cabinet as you are looking at the cabinet.

Re: Hinge Adjustment

Hi
Started on our project now - had to cut concrete yesterday to get power to the island - oh boy!!!!
Anway - we've put the laundry in and it looks a million dollars pic attached.

What I need to know is how to adjust the hinges so the doors close with a light push. In My laundry the tall cabinets all do it - the high wall mounted one needs pushing. I am after perfection!!

Re: Hinge Adjustment

Ikea uses a hinge called a "Blum" hinge. When I first started my company and had to install the doors I hated it because they would always be out of alignment and would stick out like a sore thumb. However, over time I have begun to really appreciate the concept behind the "Blum" hinge. I spend extra time with every customer showing them how to adjust their doors because after time they will all begin to sag, loosen, or look out of line. There are three screws on the hinge that allow you to adjust the depth, height, and side. I strongly suggest you look at the illustration located here.

Re: Hinge Adjustment

Ah yes - thankyou

But how do I get that "light" touch

Some of my doors have it and some don't - I am missing something.

Re: Hinge Adjustment

The physics escapes me:
Some doors from say 9 or more inches out will close with a slight push almost like their weight is carrying them to a soft close.
Other doors seem stuck in the groove so to speak
