Adding a Dishwasher Drawer in an IKEA Kitchen

Dishwasher drawers are a thing of beauty! However, as of yet, IKEA does not have a cabinet sized for the Fisher Paykel drawers. The following is an account of one person's installation of a single Fisher Paykel Dishwasher Drawer utilizing a combination of IKEA Akurum cabinets and a Mills Pride drawer.

As the standard 24" cabinet is too small (you need 24" INSIDE space, not total), I cut down a larger cabinet (circular saw with Diamond blade) to fit and redrilled the holes carefully, then reinforced the cabinet with corner brackets. You just leave the cabinet the same size and use filler boards on the inside to "close up" the space. I would NOT recommend just putting in a shelf in between, as a cabinet there would give you reinforced sides for the weight plus you must enclose/protect the cavity against moisture.

For the shelf to support it, you simply use a small strip of wood screwed into the inside of the cabinet to support the shelf and evenly distribute the weight of the DD INSTEAD of pegs (we used four screws on each side). We utilized the ledger boards that come with the base cabinets for the shelf support or you can use 1x2s.

For the drawer fronts, you can probably order the small door fronts from the Tall 88" x 30" cabinet if you decide to leave the cabinet its original 30" size and fill in the gaps inside instead of cutting it as I did (door--HDDR3088)--these may be a good size heightwise or you can carefully cut down another door or a base or oven panel (oven panels are thicker--5/8"--and thus preferable). If you cut a panel, remember to protect all cuts with oil-based primer and paint to seal out moisture. You must also allow for a gap between your two drawers--the DD and the regular drawer for moisture to escape (see DD brochure for panel and moisture details). You must also protect the INSIDE of your cabinet cavity from moisture with a moisture barrier tape and primer in other areas not covered by tape--see DD brochure.

For the bottom drawer, since my cabinet was now a "custom" size, I utilized a drawer box from HD's cabinet line which had a deep depth and height and came close to my dimensions then replaced their white front panel with mine and bought full-extension, undermount flat tracks instead of the supplied tracks, since I couldn't attach the tracks on the sides without filler boards.
