Sketch-Up: A quick and easy lesson

Learn to make a kitchen like this one!
Sketch-Up is easy to learn.

1.Draw square the size of room
You can either just drag out the approximate size (see #'s in bottom left corner of window) or drag out a random square and then type 12'3,13'6 <ENTER> (use your own #'s) Just separate them with a comma. And poof, the square changes to the correct size.
[BREAK=Make the walls]

Use the push/pull tool to make square 8' tall (again you can be approx. or type in 8' <ENTER>) Now you have a hollow box.

Click on the top face (with Selector Arrow) and Delete. Now you can see into the box.

Delete a few more walls if you want so you can see what you're doing (edge lines need deleted too)
[BREAK=Decorate the Room]

Pour some paint bucket patterns/colours on your floor and walls (I downloaded some extra choices)You'll find these in the Materials Window (open extra windows in the Window menu) I think the black & white tile is an extra Google lets you download

Use "Get Model" function to download and add the Ikea base cabinets (search 'Ikea cabinets') They are a group so right click and choose Explode to separate them.

Add cabinets like you would in Planner. Try to 'Grab' the cabinets by a corner that will help you line it up since they don't line up as easily as the Planner.

TIP: If you are having trouble getting items to move in the direction you want, use the keyboard arrows to overide a direction - red, green or blue direction - use the mouse as usual.
[BREAK=Rotating]

Rotating is, by far, the most difficult thing about Sketch-Up. It is easiest to do with components like this, when you are moving them. On top, one of those little crosses will bring up the protractor tool. Just spin until it is right. It is a bit tricky but you'll get the hang of it. The number of degrees is in the bottom right corner.

Now that you know how to Rotate, go ahead and add more cabinets on the other wall.
[BREAK=Adding Appliances]
Add appliances from Components window (look in Window menu to bring up components) I chose the option Google gives you of downloading more choices, but there are some there. Rotate to fit just like the cabinet with the Red protractor while using the Move tool. The Rotate tool is really hard to use so do it while moving - it is so much easier.

[BREAK=Add Window]
To cut window, just draw a square, click it and then delete (We'll add a window component later.) Again, if you want it exact, then type in #'s with a comma between them.

Just click with the Arrow to select window and Delete - yes it is that easy.
[BREAK=Countertops]
The countertop is just a square the size of cabinets (don't worry about overhangs now) Now add another square to finish making the L shape. Delete the dividing line between the two

Now you're going to turn that flat L shape into a countertop. Just use push/pull tool to pull up to 1.5" (I've exaggerated here so you can see.)

I made a custom Formica pattern by just saving a jpg from Formica.com, then poured it on with the paintbucket. If you want an easier version, just pick a colour from the Materials Window. To make a custom, save a jpg - then in the Materials window, chose the little + sign on the top right - you'll see where to put the path for your jpg.

Use push/pull to pull out an extra 1" overhang where needed. Again, I exaggerated here so it is easier to see.
[BREAK=Finish Cabinets]
Now draw some square doors and pick a colour to pour onto the boxes. You can use a jpg to get a wood grain if you want.
[BREAK=Finishing Touches]
Go to the Components Window and add all the fun stuff. (again, I went and downloaded the extras from Google)

Backsplash - it is made like the countertop. I started with a rectangle and used Paint Bucket with a custom jpg from Modwall tiles. Then I Pulled it out 1/4" using the Push/Pull Tool.

Give it a try! It really is easy and post your results - we all want to see your models.
