Handsaw recommendations?
I'd like to pick up a handsaw at Lowe's for cutting toekick for filler, etc. I'm trying to spend as little as possible but I want something that works.
I remember someone liking the japanese handsaws (was it kingjosiah?) Is this pull saw something similar? Bear Saw Pull Saw With Extra Fine Blade
Does anyone have a recommendation for me?
Thanks!
Gloria

Re: Handsaw recommendations?
That's probably a pretty good substitute for a Japanese saw. The key is the cutting on the pull stroke rather than the push. I think Irwin makes one too, but I've never had a chance to compare the American versions of the pull saws.
Do some test cuts on scrap to get the hang of using it, it should be the perfect tool for cutting trim/filler to length. Kudoes for going with the hand tool vs the power tool! Less dust and a LOT quieter, better cut for your buck too .
Have you checked to see if you can find reviews on possible saws on Amazon?

Re: Handsaw recommendations?
Unlike Kelly, I'm not one to use power tools.
Off to check out reviews on Amazon.
Thanks!

Re: Handsaw recommendations?
This is the one I bought. Bear Saw Pull Saw With Double Blade

It has two kinds of blades so I figured it would be more versatile.
Can't wait to use it next week!
Thanks for the advice, Tigger.

Re: Handsaw recommendations?
No problem! Let us know how it works out for you? I've got a Japanese version, but I'll need to buy a replacement at some point, is the domestic version does a good job it'd probably be a bit less expensive.

Re: Handsaw recommendations?
Just wrote about Japanese pull saw in other thread. Home Depot has 3 different sizes, I found the smallest most useful.

I am a huge fan of the Japanese-style, pull-to-cut handsaw. However, I have spent lots of money on mine at Woodcraft. Your toekick panels need to be plotted carefully before cutting so try to put all of your cuts in the corners or where they will be least obnoxious. It won't really matter how well you cut or what you cut with.
The Japanese saw has un-freakin'-believably sharp teeth that cut ultra-smooth edges. We Westerners tend to assume muscle is the answer. With a pull saw, the clean edge and straight line are only achieved by giving up the muscle and becoming one with the wood. It takes many feet of practice cuts to get the hang of it.

Re: Handsaw recommendations?
Kelly, I believe you. That's why I said I am *unlike* you in that I don't use power tools. Unless maybe you count a waffle-maker as a power tool.
