cover panel solution for 30" wall cabinet + horizontal cabinet?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone else has built a kitchen with horizontal cabinets directly on top of 30" wall cabinets. I want to include cover panels in the design, but there's no 47" cover panel offered, so I'm not sure what to do.

Would it make sense to cut down one of the high cabinet cover panels, and cut it to make it shallower?

This also brings up the problem of my mounting the suspension rails flush with the wall, when I should have left 3/4" for the cover panels. Does it seem like it would be a problem to cut the panel 3/4" to make it fit?

Thanks in advance,

Frank

Re: cover panel solution for 30" wall cabinet + horizontal cabinet?

Alas, the 30" horizontals are a tad wider than 30", so they won't exactly line up.

To make a 47" cover panel, you will need to get a tall cabinet side panel and cut that down.

I'm not quite understanding what you mean by the 3/4" ...

Re: cover panel solution for 30" wall cabinet + horizontal cabinet?

It simply doesn't line up. Cutting or planing a cover panel is a lot of work and requires specialized tools or unbelieveable patience and a good eye for level. I simply used a wall cab cover panel to the horizontal then cut down a cover panel for the horizontal. I tired several moldings across the seam until one made my wife happy. It looks good if not perfect. But I have an awesome arrangement of cabinents.

Re: cover panel solution for 30" wall cabinet + horizontal cabinet?

Frank,

There are two kinds of horizontal cabinets.

1) The horizontal cabinets with garage style doors are either are 15" tall and 30 3/8" or 39 1/8" wide. Known as (solid door) WH3015, WHZ3915, (glass door) WGHZ3015, WGHZ3915

2) The fan/refridgerator cabinets do come in widths exactly 30" wide (the same width as the regular 30" wide wall cabinet). They do NOT use garage style doors however. For example, a WFR3015 is 30" wide and 15 1/4" tall. It uses two 15" x 15" doors.

Hope that helps...

P.S. I cut down larger panels to trim the sides of my stacked wall cabinets. For a floating pantry, I stacked a 30" above a 39" cabinet. I ended up having very little waste because the remaining pieces were used in place of the deco trim for my high wall cabinets. Essentially, we wrapped our cabinets with 1/2" thick panel. Since the cabs hang about 1" from the ceiling, no one would know (or care) that the panel doesn't cover the entire top of the cabinet.

Erika
