Re: back to back island cabinet anchoring.
You can use the joining plates on the bottom of the cabinets, thereby alleviating the need to notch the backs, or use a piece of 1x3" or similar material.
For wall cabinets, you can keep the lip in place if you use a piece of 1x material in between the backs of the cabinets, and use short screws through the "L" mounting clips to secure the cabinets to the 1x. Keeping the lip in place means you don't have to rip down the cover panel.
There are a couple of other ways to do this if you're using a large number (4 or more) of cabinets, or a combination of wall and base cabs., etc.
