back to back island cabinet anchoring.

Hi,

Can someone tell me how to anchor an island made up of cabinets set back to back.?

How do I anchor these cabinets when they are situated like this?

Re: back to back island cabinet anchoring.

We used flat joining plates. These are flat pieces of steel with holes in them, found in the area where the hinges are located in the hardware store. You need to notch out a bit of the back panel, then pass the joining plate through it, hold the two cabinets together tightly and predrill and screw in with flathead screws. We used two on the bottom and one on either side.

If you're using wall cabinets as part of your island base, you'll also need to remove the lip on the back of the bottom shelf which is there to offset the standoff caused by the suspension rail.

I've been blogged!
Re: back to back island cabinet anchoring.

You can use the joining plates on the bottom of the cabinets, thereby alleviating the need to notch the backs, or use a piece of 1x3" or similar material.

For wall cabinets, you can keep the lip in place if you use a piece of 1x material in between the backs of the cabinets, and use short screws through the "L" mounting clips to secure the cabinets to the 1x. Keeping the lip in place means you don't have to rip down the cover panel.

There are a couple of other ways to do this if you're using a large number (4 or more) of cabinets, or a combination of wall and base cabs., etc.

Feel free to PM me if you want to go into this further.
