I made the same mistake--there really should be a better way to warn newbies that you need to put the drawer separator piece in place before installing countertops!

I did a slightly simpler fix. I used 2 dowels (5/16" by 2" long), with glue instead of the screws through the top of the cabinet frame. I then installed a second metal bracket at the back of the cabinet. It seems pretty bullet-proof to me, and didn't really take long to do.

This is a common problem. L bracket will work fine but for a stronger and cleaner look, I use Pocket screws. If yoiu don't have a Pocket screw jig, then you can drill a 1/8" hole at an shallow angle into the divider and the cabinet top piece.

Eitherway, just make sure the divider is centered and don't forget to put the metal cross piece to support the divider.

Yeah, it's probably best to assemble everything before installing just to make sure you have all the parts. This way you know how it all goes together and there won't be any surprises.
