How do you get the legs screwed on tight and have the pins line up to hold the shelf. Surely there is more than just trial and error to it. Any ideas? I don't want to keep screwing them on and off and get them loose.

Welcome to IKEAFANS, H and Metheny.

There is no "proper" way to do this - it really is just a matter of turning the legs until they are tight, and then turning just a little more to line up the peg holes. You will not be hurting anything by turning a little extra to achieve the correct alignment.

I got lucky with 3 out of 4 legs: started screwing the legs with the pegs facing the way you want them to end up. On the 4th leg it was off and I tried to over-tighten as Chuck suggested, but the peg was about 180 degrees from the correct position. I solved the problem by unscrewing the leg from table top, and backing off the screw (still stuck in leg) 180 degrees using Vise-Grips being careful not the to damage the threads. Strategy worked fine and now my Lack coffee-table-turned-TV-stand has more stable legs than the Lack I saw on display at the store.
