We have an island that is made of two 36" base cabinets ganged togethor. The drawers, doors, and sides of the cabinets are rubrik stainless steel. The rest of the kitchen is going to be adel medium brown.
We purchased the 3X8' adel cover panel and had plans to cut it down. After opening the box we don't like the grain on the cover panel.
We are now considering having the back of the island also be stainless steel. I haven't been able find anything from Ikea that would fit the back of the island so are considering having a panel fabricated somewhere.
I read that there is a formica that looks like stainless steel. Does anyone have any experience with this?
It seems like the formica is something that any cabinet shop could fabricate and it would save me the trouble of having to cut a cover panel accurately with a circular saw.
Any ideas. Does anyone know a stainless fabricator in south florida?
I plan to make some calls tomorrow and see how metal compares to the formica option.
The other option is to install adel medium brown door panels on the back of the island. We are on a tight budget and the cost of the door panels starts adding up quick.
I'm sure some of the folks with more experience with this product will jump in, but you might want to look into fx sheeting - they make stainless and other metal products that are somehow laminated to flexible clear plastic or something like that. They are great for the fronts of dishwashers and fridges, so I'd expect that they would work very well for the back of an island.
I am doing stainless base cabinets. I would not use fake stainless in a kitchen; it will just look fake.
There are several manufacturers of stainless cabinet doors and panels. Try maplecraftusa, lasertron, and one that I think is called Frigo Design. Of these, maplecraft and frigo are likely more reasonably priced. You might also consider just ordering a few door panels from one of these, and sticking them on the back of the island. Alternatively, any metalworks place could cut a sheet or sheets of steel.
The cover panel needs to be approximately 71 3/4" X 30 3/8". I am basing this on the size of two 36" base cabinets from ikea's website. I'm on the road and unable take an exact measurement.
I couldn't find the rubrik stainless available in a size that would increment the 71 3/4". I also looked at the imperative stainless and couldn't find anything.
The rubrik white aluminum is available in a 18" X 30" for $47. Four of these ought to cover up the back of the island.
Thanks for the links to the company's that sell stainless products.
They have a variety of brushed finishes, too, in addition to just shiny.
FX sheeting has a metal component, but it is not stainless steel. Stainless steel does not bend like that. That stuff is like fancy contact paper. Even according to their own website, they say it is the "only laminate available in today's market that duplicates both the look and the durability of real metal sheeting." It may have its place, for example, I might consider using it on the inside of stainless cabinet doors to cover melamine, but personally there is no way I would use it to cover the back of a peninsula or island.
It also will not match the cabinets. Even stainless steel from different manufactures varies in color and brush finish, and it can be very noticeable when the light hits it.
Ah- you misunderstood me and I slightly mis-typed. I meant that it is stain-less, in that the lexan protects the metal layer.
My point was that there have been ikeafans who have used, and are very happy with, this product in very visible locations.
Re: the multi-panel solution - Another ikeafan just did this with brown-black panels and metal edging in between them. It looked fantastic! My parents liked it so much that they are going to do something similar in their kitchen, except with contrasting wood instead of metal.
I was in the same predicament when I hacked a rubrik base cabinet into a kitchen island on casters. I used Softmeta l-- very similar to the Alsa Corp product but less expensive and it was a very good match to the Rubrik.
This is the main company that sells it but you can sometimes find it on eBay a little cheaper and I've also seen it in True Value hardware stores.
I used additional glue to make sure it didn't peel off. Applying it smoothly was really a pain but it was worth it.
Glass Decor will send you a sample for a dollar if you want to see it first before you buy a roll of it.
I also saw on HGTV last week a designer who used aluminum flashing from a home improvement store to simulate stainless. Supposedly it was very inexpensive so you may also want to look into that. (Wish I'd seen it sooner, honestly.)
