Questions about Edge Banding
Because I'm concerned about gaps between cabinet doors, I'm planning to put wood veneer edge banding on white Ikea cabinet boxes and have a few questions that maybe you all can help me with.
I'm using Nexus Yellow-Brown cabinets which Ikea says is oak veneer. I've seen Red Oak, White Oak, and Natural Oak edge banding. Does anyone know which matches Nexus YB the best? I've also seen prefinished vs. unfinished banding -- anyone know if there's a prefinished banding that is a close match to Nexus YB?
I've seen Peel & Stick and Iron-on edge banding. Is one better than the other?
When I put the edge banding on, do I just put it on top of the cabinet's white veneer or do I need to remove the white veneer first?
Will edge banding last? I've seen veneers peel off over time; has anyone had this problem with edge banding they've put on Ikea cabinets? Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
Thanks for your help!!

Re: Questions about Edge Banding
You should try to match the stain, not the material if possible. We have not done a Nexus YB kitchen yet so I haven't looked for edge banding. Fastcap ( FastCap) has a good selection of edgebanding. They are wicked nice to work wih and will send you out a sample chain.
If you can't get the edge banding to match, you could order unfinished Oak FastEdge from a local Fastcap distributor and stain to match. I am very impressed with the FastEdge adhesive. Much easier to work with than iron-on laminates. We have not had any complaints about delamination.
You should be able to apply it over the existing white laminate. It is a lot easier to apply prior to cabinet assembly since you can easily trim it with their edgebanding trimmer. Once then cabinets are assembled, it is much, much harder to trim.

Re: Questions about Edge Banding
Is Nexus YB the same color as Tidaholm? If so, try white oak with a clear coat of oil base polyurethane. We had open shelves made to go under our very high closed Tidaholm cabinets - the carpenter used red oak since that is what he could get in plywood and solid wood (for edging). He tried various stains and finishes and the best match was just a clear coat of Minwax oil polyurethane.
The red oak is a little pinker than the Tidaholm oak, but under most lighting you cannot see a lot of difference. I think a white oak would be a very near match.

Re: Questions about Edge Banding
Plinths do come with edge banding but only about 15" per package. To do the edges of the all the cabinets, you who have to order several dozen plinths!

Hmmm. you'd think they'd sell edge banding in the matching door colors.
I'm trying to figure out the best door config for a pantry mod..... and would need like 64" if i cut a large door down from 15"w to 12" w.

Re: Questions about Edge Banding
You would think they would provide edgebanding but they don't. Even as Certified IKEA installers, we don't have access to the various materials. I have made a request through IKEA but have been told it is not available.
