PAX wall cabinet directly on top of PAX wardrobe

Hello, all --

I can't find any forum discussions regarding the installation of PAX wall cabinets directly on top of PAX wardrobes to make a floor to ceiling wardrobe wall (as seen in the 2007 or 2006 catalog -- are old catalogs available on this site for downloading?). Most everyone who has posted here seems to be installing the wall cabinets without PAX wardrobes below.

If anyone has placed the wall cabinets on top of wardrobes, can you give us a hint about how you handled the join between the two cabinets? Did you use biscuits or dowels, or just attach the wall cabinet to the wall while it's sitting on top of the wardrobe? I think we have only about three inches between the wall cabinet tops and the ceiling.

If others have experience with this, we'd be most grateful to hear about it.

Many thanks,

Cindy in Chicago

Re: PAX wall cabinet directly on top of PAX wardrobe

Hi Cindy,
I've been wondering about this too
because I'm going to be doing the
exact same thing with my front hall reno.
I assume that the Pax Cabinet uses dowels
to hold it onto the plinth so I'm hoping
to use the plinth that comes with the cabinet
as a template and drill into the top of the wardrobe
so the cabinet will align and be held securely.
Hopefully the Pax Cabinet instructions will get posted
so we can get a better idea of how it goes together?
I'm going to be using the 201 cm wardrobes
under the cabinets so I'll have about 4 inches
to my ceiling. I'm hoping the mirrored Vikedal
door becomes available for the cabinets.

You could try Ted's suggestion and drill holes for dowels in the tops of the wardrobes, or you could just run a couple of screws through the bottom of the wall cabinet and into the top of the wardrobe. If you've properly secured the wardrobe to wall, I'm not even sure I'd bother securing the wall cabinet, also.

Re: PAX wall cabinet directly on top of PAX wardrobe

The wall cabinets plinths are constructed w/the screw posts and cam locks that are used with all the other furniture.

The cabinet box is complete on it's own - bottoms are finished too, not "raw"

There are metal angle brackets at the top inside corners used to hang the cab on the wall.

you could certainly just drill holes in the bottom of the wall cab and top of the wardrobe cab, and use connector bolts. I might be tempted to use the angle-brackets then to stabilize it by attaching to wall (not so much "hanging" as "keeping stable")

Thank you all for the suggestions. We'll probably tackle this next weekend, and I'll post about what we end up doing.

Re: PAX wall cabinet directly on top of PAX wardrobe

Sorry for the delay in answering. It turned out to be very easy to install the PAX wall cabinets on top of our existing PAX wardrobes. The booklet that comes with the wall cabinets offers detailed installation instructions for the following options: placing the cabinets on the floor, mounting them directly to a wall, or putting them on top of wardrobes.

For the installation we did, the top cabinets are screwed down onto the wardrobes with no attachment to the wall behind them needed. Angle brackets are provided for the the back interior corners of the wall cabinets.

Two pictures are attached. (Please ignore the ragged Billy boxes leaning up against the right side of the cabinets.)

It's not so apparent from the photos, but the birch doors on the new upper cabinets are noticably lighter than the doors on our four-year-old PAX wardrobes. We're hoping they'll darken to about the same color.
