can i install wall cabinet/upper cabinet lighting after hanging?

Hi everybody-

I'm trudging through a stat kitchen install by myself.. So far I have lower cabinets put together and my birch numerer waterloxed and ready to be set into place, after which i'll be ready to have my double domsjo put in..i started with the lower cabinets because it was easiest for me to work by myself on the floor level stuff without another set of hands.

so, because i will have help putting together and hanging the wall cabinets on saturday (which, i am not sure when i will have another set of hands again ) and i would ultimately love in-cabinet lights (i'll be doing the glass stat cabinet) and some under cabinet lights - how much of an issue will it be to put in the cabinets and have someone out at a later time to wire them? i am a big DIY'er, and i am comfortable doing a few minor electrical things...but i have never put in new wires to anything...if there are any tips or tricks to help me out i would really appreciate it!!!!

thanks!
Cheryl

Re: can i install wall cabinet/upper cabinet lighting after hanging?

It will always be easer to install lighting before hanging the cabinets, that is how I did it. It also makes it a lot easer to hide the wires (which could be a code issue). Most of the ikea lights actually end in a plug, so I created switched outlets. It is always possible to install lighting after the fact, it just makes it a little harder...

Re: can i install wall cabinet/upper cabinet lighting after hanging?

You can certainly put lighting in afterward... as mnpaslay says, it's just a bit harder.

One thing you can do is figure out what type of lights you might want, and where you'd want the switches. You can have the boxes for the outlets placed more conveniently that way -- ganged together in a central location, or set up individually.

If you want in-cabinet lighting, you might take time to think about where the cords would be going, and maybe plan for the cord exit holes, so if any exit holes need to be cut out/drilled, you can do that ahead of time.

All the lighting wires have to go somewhere. We used cable/cord channel from OSH to contain all our lighting wires from our under-mount lighting. (2-part - one shell mounts to cabinet, bundle wires in, snap on cover. ) -- need to allow for this being NOT hidden behind the cabinet back, is all.

You'll just have a few more contortions putting in the lights after the cabinets, but nothing horrible.

And PLEASE.. No trying to install the sink by yourself! ;^)

Re: can i install wall cabinet/upper cabinet lighting after hanging?

thank you for the advice and reassurance

oh my word, trust me...i probably would *entertain* thoughts of lifting the domsjo if it was anywhere near doable, but a) i can barely scoot it in the box on the floor..and b) that would totally stink to drop that sink, not only because i'm sure it would break my feet, but also - that sink is a thing of beauty

thank you again!
