cutting cover panel - pls put a bullet in my head

I've been trying to cut a straight (or even a somewhat straight) cut on an Adel White Cover Panel. Put a new blade, "fine cuts, plywood, plastic, veneers", and I can't keep the circular saw straight. Started using a clamped straight guide, and then went to freehand cut. The blade won't stay in the cut and I'm even getting sparks from the material. #%&*! ME!

What are you all using to cut this space age stuff? Maybe I'll go to the jig saw.

For anyone else out there, use a straight edge, clamped to the cover panel to cut.

I am just getting ready to do my kitchen, but i have made plenty of straight cuts this way in the past for other projects. I have this brand, although mine is only a 4' version: Amazon.com: Griset FT8TS 108" Tru-Grip PRO ft'rŪ Straight edge and Tool Guides 99" Useable Sold As A Pair: Home Improvement

Thumbs up Re: cutting cover panel - pls put a bullet in my head

I agree with Davlun--those TruGrip clamps are great, if you can still find them. I bought three different sizes at a woodworking show several years ago, and they are some of the most useful items in my shop.

I think there are alternatives out there, but having the clamps built-in is a real time and work saver.

The best, cheap, long straight edge that I've found is the Ikea suspension rail. A little duct tape on the back side so that it stays put better and won't scratch anything. Use clamps on the thin part and you are good to go. Can't guarantee how perfectly straight they are, but worked for me. Much, much better than looking for a straight 2x4 or MDF.

I've been blogged!
Re: cutting cover panel - pls put a bullet in my head

The rail is good, and so is the ledger board that comes with the plinths fronts (the only thing it's good for, if you ask me). You have a trade off, in that the rail is stiffer than the ledger board, but it's shorter than the l/b.
