We are rounding the corner toward our granite installation on Friday, so I am starting to think about the "after that" plans. Which includes the finish work stuff like the deco strip. We are loving the new 30" uppers we put on--much more open and happy than the 39" uppers. But now when I hold up the deco strip to the cabinet, it looks so TALL. Like it cuts way into the usable space under the cabinets, more than is probably needed to hide what it is meant to hide. Has anyone here cut down deco strips in "height". So instead of having something like 2.5" of material hanging down, you adjust it? We would like it to be down to about 2/3 of its height, if it were possible.
This would mean cutting off the laminate edge that is there now, and I worry that will be detrimental--that the raw edge would show too much.
Anyone done this with any success?
And yes, I know I would also have to cut my cover panels, but I figure that would be pretty easy, and would be capped off at the top by the deco strip moulding, so it would work out.
i worry that it will be somewhat hard to cut a VERY straight line the entire length.... what about flipping it on the side so that only the 3/4" shows? i know others have done it
Yeah, that would be too short. We're stuck between two heights!
We thought about that, too (the cutting it straight), but do you think a table saw would do it alright? We have a General Contractor friend across the street I am certain I could bother to borrow time on his table saw to cut them...
Intriguing suggestion, Eva. I was already digging on the doubled-up trim on the top. I wonder if it would translate underneath, tiered like the uppers are. Or would we just keep bumping the edge with our elbows and get really irritated with it...LOL Hrmmm...
if you were going to "steppe" the bottom doubled trim i might think of making it go inward rather than out... i just think of that extra bump as a dust collection area.
or squared off edge and then rounded under. just thinkin
