Hello!

We have a 55'' long peninsula and the back of the cabinets are facing to our dining room. So I'm going to buy a nice quality plywood and would like to stain to match our cabinet color - Adel Medium Brown

I saw the following page about the matching finish material and looks like "Behr wood stain" is a good option for us.

http://ikeafans.com/FAQModificationFinishMatches.htm

However, I'm not sure if I just need to apply 1 or 2 coat of Behr wood stain right on to the plywood? Or I need to follow the 5 coats listed below, then apply Behr wood stain??

-1 coat of prestain wood condition (brand not important)
-4 coats ZAR Salem Maple #110 with 12-24 hour wait time in between. Use #0000 and a tack cloth in between coats once dry.

Also, what would be the best way to attach this board to the back side of cabinets? Back panel is super thin that I don't think it will hold the heavy plywood... (I'm thinking about using 3/8'' plywood. Do you think I need to get thicker plywood?)

Thanks!

p.s. I'm also considering to paint the plywood to match our wall color, but not sure if it's a good idea since the board will be kicked by anyone who will sit the bar counter. Any advise?

Kuma,

Have you attempted any Adel Medium Brown stain matching? I need to do the same and would be interested to know your formula and results.

I think many people choose to use cover panels for this application - no staining needed. is there a compelling reason not to do this?

Well, we went to Home Depot to look for the Behr stain with the color listed on ikeafan site, but they didn't carry it. So I ended up using different brand.

Since I'm on vacation now, I can post any detail info (even don't remember the brand name). All I can remember now is that we chose 2 stain colors - old walnut and something. And used a better grade plywood. We had several coats on it, though the instruction recommended 2-3 coats.

It turned out a little more richer color than the cabinet door. But we used the panel for under the counter of our island, you don't see as much, and the color is close enough to the cabinet. It just worked out fine for us. But if you are thinking about doing so for wall cabinet cover panel, you might want to find out other recipe.

Comparing to buying big cover panel to cover 24'' x 155'' area, we probably saved $50-$70. =)

If you would like more detail info, I can post it after our vacation. Please let me know!

I am cutting down some 15" drawers to 12" and needed to stain the cut edges to match adel medium brown. I found this which matches pretty well:
