Hubby and I started a cosmetic update to the kitchen by retiling the floorand new countertops. As usual, the job snowballed and now we are gutted down to really bad, patchy drywall. The electrician was here for three days, so electric is good. I need a handy person who can do some drywall repair and then install the Ikea cabinets we have in the garage already assembled. Once, they're on the wall, we can do all trim, doors, etc. If we don't have a sink, stove, soon - we may kill each other. Any suggestions?


Should I go throughmy Ikea store or via a suggestion?

I used a certified Ikea installer out of the NJ stores and they were great. I'm betting the ones in Chicago would also be great, but the one drawback is they have a long lead time (at least 2 months).

I live about 10 minutes from the Bolingbrook Ikea, so I used one of their recommended people to come out and do my kitchen measurements. The company we used was QWR Services. The guy who came out was pretty nice, though almost killed both himself and my fridge when he managed to bridge two electrical outlets with his tape measure (!!!). Not sure if you're closer to Schaumburg or Bolingbrook, but if you ask their kitchen staff, they should have a flyer with a couple of recommended installer names.

I don't know that you need a certified Ikea installer. My contractor has never installed an Ikea kitchen in his life but I'm confident that he'll be just fine doing the installation of our assembled cabinets.

I'd get some recommendations from friends, neighbors, Angie's List (www.angieslist.com) and just hire a good contractor.

Thanks for everyone' reply. I have to go to the Schaumburg store today and will grab tehir list. I have a contractor that I use for everything. However, he's kind of turning his nose up at "Ikea" cabinets so i don't want to involve him in their installation with a bad attitude going in. I'll see what my store has to ffer. Hubby and I may need to buckle down and do it as we can't live much longer with no kitchen, although Sunday's fight boiled over and then calmed down.

I wrote that original post in the throes of anxiety/anger/frustration. Since then we demoed a wall oursleves, had new drywall installed and then, my husband and I actually installed our cabinets ourselves and they look darn good. So no, I did not find an installer as I ended up not needing one. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
