IKEA recommends fastening anything over 75cm tall to the wall. I'd like to get a 5×5 EXPEDIT bookcase in my new place, but I doubt I'll be able to drill into the wall to fix it in place.

Should I risk not attaching it to the wall? How unstable is the EXPEDIT? Has anyone else done this?

I have the 6' one. My kids would climb it so I have it attached to the wall. I suppose if there are no kids around, you could get away with it. The 15" depth makes them somewhat stable. If it was against a wall, on a hard surface (not carpet), and you had heavy stuff only on the bottom shelves, it might be ok.

This desk attachment would make it more stable
