Re: Sloping Cabinet Doors
There are two different screws that adjust the hinges. Here's Chuck's excellent instructions:
It looks like you've either installed the hinge improperly, or over-adjusted the hinge. When these steps are done right, the doors fit like a dream. Sort of.
Start by checking the hinges and make sure everything is properly seated and tightened - the hinges in the door, the hinges plates on the cabinet, and the hinge throat onto the plate. If you get past that, then try adjusting again.
There are two screws for adjusting. The first one, closest to you, moves the door left to right on the frame; the second screw, near the back of the hinge throat, moves the door forward or back on the frame.
Adjusting the hinges to properly align the doors is a trial-and-error process. You need to do one screw at a time, one hinge at a time, one door at a time, one step at a time, and readjust as necessary. In your case, start by turning the front screws clockwise - this will "push" the doors apart, and with enough turns (maybe 3/4 to a full rotation of that screw on each hinge), the doors will close properly. Do one hinge on one door, then the second hinge on the same door.
Make sure to leave a bit of a gap - about 1/8" - between the doors, as they will want to expand over the summer, and will rub together if you don't leave that gap.
If you finish doing that adjusting, and there is a gap, and the door still won't close, you need to work on the back adjusting screw. This screw works by changing the angle of the door vis-a-vis the cabinet, and puts a little "snap" into the close. I forget which turn moves the door in which direction, but again, it's trial and error.
One more thing - all of this adjusting is done with the door dampers off the hinges. They are installed after all the adjustments are completed, and have to taken off before future adjustment is made.
