I bought some used cabinets in white laminate with stainless steel or aluminum trim, along with great appliances and a decent countertop and stainless steel sink. They are all in great condition and this is for a rental. I just couldn't go thru the nightmare that I went thru with an IKEA contractor again, so I got someone else. But I would like to use the little cabinets (15 in. long) at the top with the windows and the little lights in them, and then I would paint them white (they come in wood with aluminum trim). So then they would pretty well match the cabinets I bought but add some interest. Has anyone done anything like this? I see mixed and matched cabinets in magazines and was hoping someone else has done this on this list.:?

I have--and I know of a few others on the list who are planning to. Mine look great. You seem to be going about it the right way: not having the different manufacturer's cabinets touch; repainting might be tricky, because you'd probably want to match the finish if not the color. Since one set is white with aluminum trim and the other is aluminum with wood trim, would it work if you used a wooden countertop as the element that ties them together. You probably wouldn't have to use all wooden countertop either. Good luck.

Minmim, thanks for letting me know I am not the first with this idea and that it worked for you. I am afraid to use a wood (real wood) countertop in a rental, as it takes care and also if we get the bird-flu, which I read is only a matter of time...I don't want renters getting sick...
I think I can manage to paint the wood white...just need to carefully match the white.

You can get a wood-look laminate countertop, cheap, relatively sanitary and a great look!

Right! Or one of the laminate countertops with wood edging.

I think I might need clarification from your first post. This is what I think you mean: that you already bought some non-Ikea cabinets and that you plan to buy some Ikea wall cabinets in fifteen inch width. Is that right? If so, why don't you just buy the wall cabinet boxes in white? This is why I think I may have read this incorrectly.

I may give up on this idea--but to clarify, I have a modern style white (but used) cabinets with aluminum trim to install, and I thought I might mix them with the small IKEA cabinets with the little windows and these are modern, too, but they are not white, but they also have aluminum trim. Hope that makes sense.

If the Ikea cabinets are kitchen cabinets, then you can definitely get them in white so that you don't have to paint them.

Kitchen, which IKEA cabinets are you interested in using?
You said they are small wood cabinets with little windows and aluminum trim. That doesn't sound like something IKEA makes...at least not for the kitchen. Can you post a link or a product name?
