Okay - the ultimate Domsjo challenge!!

I am about 2/3rd complete with my Akurum system. I had to lag into a brick wall. That in itself deserves its own thread and discussion.

The wall cabinets are up. I am working on the base cabinets and the appliances now. The bottom part of the wall is stone so I really have about zero chance of lagging into stone, so I am going to go with the four feet and not the wall board. I will also be installing the solid wood countertop.

Here's my challenge: I am installing a Domjso sink as an end piece (right side. I have a dishwasher to the left of the sink. So there are no cabinets on either side of the sink for support.

Question 1: do I need some sort of support board on the side of the dishwasher (inbetween the dishwasher and the sink) to keep it steady? Or can i just attach it to the countertop?

To make things even more interesting, I had a plumber install the sink for me. He put the sink top on the base cabinet BEFORE I knew I had to put the countertop on. Naturally. So now, the sink top sits directly on the top of the base cabinet. Everything is bolted together and the holes for the water supply and the drain are already drilled in the base cabinet.

Question 2: Should I uninstall the sink (fair amount of unbolting, etc.) in order to put the countertop in on the left side (on top of the dishwasher)?

If the answer to question 2 is 'YES', then what do I do about the gap on the RIGHT side between the top of the base cabinet and the sink ledge? The sink is an end piece and there is NOTHING for the right side of the sink to rest on if I lift the sink to accomodate the countertop on the left? Make sense? Good. Please explain to me. Seriously, though, should I cut a small sliver of countertop to take up the space?

If the answer to question 2 is 'NO', then the countertop on the left will sit about 1/2 higher than the sink top. Is there a graceful way to make that transition? This is the least amount of work, but it may look funky.

Also, if NO, then the metal supports will likely have to sit a little lower in the cabinet than if the sink rests on the countertop. Right? Is the sink supposed to touch the metal support braces or are they just meant to keep the sides of the cabinet from spreading apart?

Also, if NO, what about mounting the doors on the front of the base cabinet? Will I be able to install the doors to swing open?

Finally, question 3: there are a set of toggle bolts that come with the sink. Where in creation do they go? The picture in the instructions is not clear at all. In fact, it only has an arrow that points to the underside of the sink. Do they toggle in the hole that is in the middle of the side? DO I have to tap my own holes in the side to accomodate the screws?

And, YES, in case you were wondering the ENTIRE project has been this complicated. Don't even get me started on the electrical and masonry work I had to do before I could install the base cabinets. All, in all a good learning experience, but Oy!

I could probably attach a few pictures if that might help.

I don't have all the answers you're looking for ... I'm assuming you're asking about the double domsjo ? At IKEA they told me I'd need to add some support to both sides of the cabinet - I had shown filler on both sides of the sink since I wanted the sink centered in the window. They recommended using coverpanel the length of the cabinet.

You will want some countertop material on both sides of the sink - to keep it level ... the countertop will need to be notched out for the sink to fit properly.

that metal bar is to add strength to the cabinet. It is installed near the top of the doors - so when you open the doors you see the bar at the top ... and when you close the doors they bong on the metal bar.

If it's the double domsjo you will need to uninstall the sink to install the countertop ..

those toggle bolts go in the hole that is in the middle of the underside edge of the sink. you don't need to tap your own holes

sounds like you've made a lot of progress and have a complicated project with the bricks and the stone. We love photos here ... if you have some photos of your project why not start a progress blog here ...

I'm happy to be the first to welcome you to this teriffic site!

The double Domsjo sink requires countertop on both sides - it is not designed for an 'end of run' installation. The sink is supported by the countertop, not (directly) by the sink cabinet. You don't need extra support where the dishwasher is, but do need support on the other side.

It is a double sink. Hmmm. I wish the store folks would have indicated that an end run was not advisable. We went over the the diagram with them thoroughly.

Any way to salvage the set-up? SHould I custom build a support piece? Could I use a narrow base cabinet?

Could you use a piece of butcherblock vertically to support the sink on the end? It would be thick enough for the sink edge to perch on. The ikea planning site (and 07 catalog) show an island constructed this way. You could screw the block to the sink cabinet from inside and use hidden L brackets to attach it to the floor and wall. Good luck

Yes, that would have been nice. I'll leave the sink questions to those that have them, or have installed them, but I do want to say welcome and hi!

Here's hoping the rest of your install is smoother than the previous! You can fall back on us for help. And, we love pictures. But you probably already knew that.

I think you should put a cabinet to the right of the sink, not only will it solve your installation problem but it will give you a place to set dishes and things. Us right-handers are always using that side of the counter.

If there is the chance you might sell the house one day it will be easier to do if there is a cabinet and counter on that right side as well - end of run sinks aren't exactly common

good luck

Sorry, that bit about the store probably sounded snarky. The store folks were very helpful. Maybe the program could be edited to warn folks that end cap sinks are more difficult to work with.

I missed this entry before....

I found the hole in the sink on the middle edge. The screw holes don't seem to match up though. Sigh! I hope I did not install the cabinet backwards.
