Help w/ Pax Drawers in 20" wardrobe

Greetings Team IKEA!

Well, my husband and I survived putting together a set of four IKEA Pax wardrobes and even successfully put on the sliding doors without too much trouble.

I'm up to the fun part: customizing the interiors. The configuration of the wardrobes is two 30" frames on the outside and two 20" frames on the inside. So, if you're looking from left to right, it goes: 30, 20, 20, 30 (with the sliding doors exposing 50" at a time).

The problem is that when I installed a drawer in the 20" frame, it can't pass the sliding door, rendering it "stuck" in wardrobe and, therefore, useless. Did I do something wrong or does this configuration simply not allow for drawers on the interior cabinets?

Thanks for any tips folks can provide.

- Ilana

Re: Help w/ Pax Drawers in 20" wardrobe

It sounds as tho' the sliding doors overlap the centerline just enough to keep your drawers from pulling out entirely.

You *could* re-assemble the units to be 20-30-30-20 and put the drawers on the opening edges - there's not going to be overlap that way.

Maybe check the "end stops" for the sliding doors to make sure they're not stopping the door before the very edge of the track?

I suppose I could do that, but then I'd have the same problem putting drawers on the interior 30" wardrobe. Plus, I think if I even suggest taking them apart, my husband will divorce me on the spot.

I opted to just do shelves on the interior 20" frames. These things offer plenty of storage options -- it's easy enough to work around little problems.

Re: Help w/ Pax Drawers in 20" wardrobe

so... you have to have the drawers in the middle? and not on the outer edges? You could use everything you have now, just rearrange it.

BTW - this is not uncommon. Our closets have built-in organizers (previous owners) and the men's side has one bank of drawers which don't open fully because they hit the door edge, but the other bank open fine (clears) (drawers set up like yours)

You could, maybe, put one additional side in the middle to make the unit 3/4" wider - maybe that would allow enough clearance? And keep your 30-20-20-30 arrangement...? (I'm wondering how that would work... It would mean pushing out the track-end-bumpers about 3/8" each side... Hmmm... <ponder ponder>)

Re: Help w/ Pax Drawers in 20" wardrobe

Ideally, I wanted drawers in all four of them. But I just don't think it's worth the trouble to make it happen. I managed to get drawers in one of the 20" inch frames (lefthand side). And I'm going to use those Komplement plastic boxes that fit the space in the other. It's a cheap and easy fix...
