Conflict re. base and wall cab install.

The DVD and IKEA website suggest you install base cabs by attaching a base cabinet wall strip.

The instructions that come with the base cabs however only have you run studs to the wall at the top back R and L of the cab. And the instructions for my tall pantry say attach it to a suspension rail or studs to the wall through the back R and L of teh cab.

IKEAFANS have said only studs to the wall and adjoining cabinets.

Which method(s) should I use?

Also, I saw a picture once of a nifty install guide but I did not receive this with my order. Is it on the website somewhere?

Thanks!

When you say studs, I assume you mean screws? The base cabinets can be installed using EITHER a ledger board set level on the wall for the bottom back edge to rest on, OR with the two legs in the back. Not both. You would use the front legs in either method.

The base cabinets have two locations, at the top left and right corners, where you attach them to the wall. These are not required to be in studs, if you happen to have a stud in the right location that's great, but if not, the screw in anchors will be fine. The stability comes from the legs and from ganging them together.

The wall cabinets use the suspension rail and attach at the top left and right back corners with a bolt/nut fastening system. The PERFEKT units do not use the rail. The tall pantries use the base cabinet system IIRC. The wall cabinets have a little lip on the back bottom to accomodate the space needed for the rail, so the cabinet hangs plumb.

The ikeafans website (not the forum area, the main site) has a streaming DVD of the installation process that might be helpful to you.

Thanks Eva.

Sorry for the mix-up on terminology. A few more questions/assurances:

1. So I do not need the base/ledger board if I have the cabinet on four legs (front and back)?

2. We do not need to screw into studs if we use "screw in anchors"?

3. By ganging them together you mean screwing the base/high cabs together? If so, where do you do it? Through one of the pre-drilled hinge/shelf screws?

4. Our tall pantry instructions have instructions for both the base cabinet and wall suspension system. Should I then not use the rail suspension system if there is no lip to prevent the cabinet from jutting out?

5. Lastly, it was in the streaming video that I saw the guide that you are suppose dto hang on a wall to guide you through the process. ANy idea where I can get one of those?

TIA!!!!

Correct

Chances are you will rarely hit a stud where the holes in the back of the cabinet are, so screw in anchors are fine. If you do hit a stud, that's fine too, you just have to use a drywall screw instead of the screw in anchor.

Yes. You will find a pair of screws, one is a long screw with a round head and the other is a sleeve the screw fits into. You'll have to drill through the holes in the cabinets. Make sure your cabs are aligned and clamp them together, and don't use a hole you'll need for a shelf or a hinge or drawer rail. You should have four points of ganging, one about a third of the way up the cabinet and one a third of the way down (or as close to that as you can get) and screw at the front and back column of holes.

I will defer this answer to those more experienced in assembly and install.

They don't exist any longer. IKEA used to give them out, but they are out of print.

We did not use the rail for our tall cabinets - just treated them as bases.
