So I have a peninsula that is18", 15", 12"....and forgot to order cover panels for the back and on side of it originally, so called and the lady just looked up my order and added them (no input from me).
I ended up with 3 of the base panels (24 5/8") and 1 wall panel (12 7/8" x32 3/4"tall)....so what was she thinking??
and I want to add one more 18"cabinet...so do I order another panel? or?
we're a little bit stumped as to what was intended and what would be the best solution.
I don't think she was thinking. Not about your peninsula, anyway. What you need is a large cover panel for the backside of your peninsula (a 3x8 cut to size would work) and one base cabinet end/cover panel. I wouldn't think you'd need another panel for an additional cabinet as you are just adding on to the end of what you've got. If I understand you correctly, that is.
Gang your cabinets (all 3 or 4 of them) together, slap the large cover panel (cut to size) on the back, put the cover panel on the side of the exposed end of the last cabinet in the run and you should be fine. Add toekick. Eh?

And please, please, please painter's tape in the location of where you will cut any panels and use an appropriate saw blade (usually called a plywood or laminate blade) - and it seems wrong, but IKEA directionsusually say to cutgood side up.
you guys are such a blessing! really! It's so good to have this extra brain power & experience available when you need it!
here's what i'm thinking of doing...only because I can't return the panels and don't want to pay the $104 for the 3x8 (tho it'd be sooo much easier)
--use the two base panels + the wall panel (cut) for a total of about 62.14" and then use quarter round (or some kind of moulding) on the wall side to get that extra inch I need. Put the 3rd base panel on the side.
I don't think it'll look tooooo bad since it'll have the eating bar overhanging it - kinda hiding the imperfection.
does this sound okay? or am I missing something?
oh and another quick question, do I need to do anything extra to support the counter, since it'll be overhanging on the peninsula??
I can't remember your cabinet style, but if it's one of the white ones, you could always go buy a sheet of the beadboard paneling stuff they sell at HD or Lowes for about $20. I don't know about finishing the edges, but it looks like it would work.
How much (inches) is your overhang, and what is your countertop material and thickness?

Conventional wisdom says that any overhang hanging over 12" should be supported. But maybe that's just for stone? I've also heard that you should have no more than 1/3 of your surface un-supported. It can be as simple as placing some flat iron supports across the tops of your cabinets, then attaching the countertop over them. Check out the Interiors page for a photo of johnml's cabinet prep for his granite. Oh, heck...I'll post it here to show you what I mean:
Does that help?
Re: your other questions...you say you can't return the cover panels. Is this a logistical/time issue, or you've been told they're non-returnable?

Well I purchased them the end of October - so they're past the returndeadline - their policy is 30 days isn't it?
Betcha they'd take them back with no hassel at all. IKEA's generally pretty good about returns. It wouldn't hurt to tell them that the IKEAn helping with your order slipped up and ordered panels that you can't use, I think they understand that Kitchen remodels can take a long time to do...
