no rear panel on kitchen base cab - will this be a problem?

Because of the way that I had to put together some of my base cabinets as I had to assemble them "around" existing pipes that I could not remove, two of my cabs (a 49 inch pull-out and 30 inch sink cab) do not have rear panels. Now that they are in place, I cannot reach around to insert and nail or even use a staple gun. My concern is that perhaps they are weaker and sway because there's nothing holding the side panels in place side to side.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on work arounds? Do you forsee any problems?

Hi

The back panel does indeed hold the shape of the cabinet.

Do you have cabinets either side that you can screw into to hold them together?

If not you could try and get hold of some additional brackets and secure the cabinet at the bottom as well as the top. That way it will be as solid as if the back had been fitted.

I hope this helps.

dear bigredbird
Thanks for the advice! I will consider it - will have to look for comparable brackets. btw - do you use a ledger to hold the bottom cabs? Would this help stablize them despite not having a rear panel?

You could also just get a couple of angle brackets and attach them to the bottom and sides at the back of the cupboard.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a ledger?

Don't your base cabinets bolt to the wall. That alone should hold them square. In addition I used the steel support that is made to hold up double drawers. Once your cabinets are setting side by side and screwed together you shouldn't have any problem.

Base cabinets do indeed screw to the wall but the brackets are both at the top, which means that the bottom of the cabinet can flex out of true.

As I said in my original post, if you have cabinets either side to screw into then it should not be a problem. My suggestion for additional brackets was only if there are no cabinets either side.

I still don't know what a ledger is though.

In the US, there's a 'ledger board' that's packaged with the toekick - it's intended as an alternative method for aligning the cabinets along the backside. Instead of using 4 legs per cabinet (2 front, 2 back), you'd use the 'ledger board' attached to the wall to rest the bottom backs of the cabinets on, and then use legs on the front only. Hardly anyone does that, though.

Thanks very much for that; now I know what a ledger board is.

The next problem is that I don't know what a toekick is.

Logic tells me that it must be what we call the plinth, that is, the board that attaches to the legs of the base cabinets to finish off the bottom of the cupboards.

If I am wrong I will go and stand in the corner.

No corner for you! Feel free to dance in the middle of the room, secure in the knowledge that toekick=plinth
