toekick edge banding

Hello All,

Hoping for some feed back on the iron-on edge banding that comes with the toekick (plinth). I'm using the Adel Med Brown and my instructions do not state what temperature to set the iron at. I have limited supply so do not want to ruin any if I can help it. Also one of the places I will need to use it will be at eye level (cut side of cover panel) so I want to have the neatest appearance possible. Instructions seem to indicated that once it is ironed on to use sand paper to smooth of the edges. Does this leave a nice finish? or is there a better way?

Thanks in advance for any advice. Jo Ann

That's a good question

We did some melamine edgebanding and it worked fine, don't have a clue what we set the iron for though... Cotton maybe? I think it's pretty forgiving, just don't use any steam and don't leave it in one place for an extended piece of time. We used a mat knife/box cutter/razor blade to trim the excess and it worked fine. The sand paper would probably work well too, have to try that the next time we use some.

As I recall, the edgebanding was pretty forgiving, we could just iron it back on if it peeled off, so you might start with a conservative heat setting and work your way up?

My brother had a really handy tool that trims the edges of edge-banding - prevents mistakes that might come with a utility knife. That wasn't Ikea edge banding though, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

For ironing, I think a slightly lower setting than cotton might be better to start with. You can always go hotter if you need to. I always use a piece of old sheet to cover the area I'm ironing, so you don't get any glue stuck on the iron.
