Kubist

Hi there,
I moved house yesterday, and in the process my Kubist wall storage unit suffered some damage to its plinth. Does anyone know if it is safe for me to just remove the plinth from the unit and have it sitting directly on the floor? Without the plinth it's a flat base, so to me it looks as though it will be solid enough, I'm just not sure if the plinth strengthens it in any way, so if removing it will make it weaker. I've tried contacting Ikea but can't get through. Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks for your help
