This is pathetic: I can't change the light bulb
I purchased and installed this four bulb fixture about six+ years ago and now the bulbs are burning out. However, neither I nor the 7 engineers who play poker at my house can figure out how to change the bulbs. The problem is that the bulbs are covered by these glass shields. We've tried pulling, pushing, and twisting the glass shield, the metal circle above it, etc. Nothing works.
I've written to Ikea 3 times, and they can't figure it out either. One of them said it was BASISK but that doesn't look right to me. So help me ikeafans, you're my only hope.

Welcome to IKEAFANS, Bob.
You need to think outside the box, man.
But seriously, it's not Basisk.
Is it possible the fixture came with a tool to grab the bulb - like a set of tongs or plier-like device?

Great insight into your toolbox Chuck.
Would you be able to get me a left handed one?
No idea about the lights though.

I could, but they're VERY expensive. I'd suggest you use the same tool, but hammer backwards.

No suggestions on the bulb, just thanks for starting my day with a laugh.

Tried that but the nails kept falling out. I'll try holding them in with a small dab of elbow grease and see if that works.

Elbow grease will definitely help. Just make sure it's the sticky kind.
(You do realize we know have a entire group of IKEAFANS scouring the www for left handed hammers and sticky elbow grease, right?)

Re: This is pathetic: I can't change the light bulb
@Chuck: No tool came with the fixture that I can remember.
About 10 days after my last (third) inquiry with Ikea, I started this tread. Then less than 10 hours after I started this thread, I got a reply from someone who actually did a lot of research:
Quote:

We have been researching the pictures that you sent. We were able to compare them to hundreds of items going back to 2000. However, we were not able to find this exact item. We do apologize for any inconvenience. The closest item that we found was the Glimt light bar
|
Although Glimt appears to be a well designed unit with easily removed fixtures (simply rotate them five times) and bulbs, mine ain't Glimt, and the instructions don't apply.
So, unless I get any other good ideas, it's time to grab the diagonal pliers and dump this puppy into the trash can.

Re: This is pathetic: I can't change the light bulb
It's okay Chuck, I managed to find a left handed hammer at a great price in a store here.
I ended up going to my local hardware store as I needed some new bubbles for my spirit level and ended up coming away with the hammer and a tin of polka dot paint.
I'm off to have a lie down now!
