You don't need the holes because the hinges are pressure-fitted, there's a little gasket there that expands when you close the little door on the hing. Hinges for other door-ed items don't use the same ones that the kitchen does. I would venture a guess that their door-hinge-hole-maker machine automatically puts screw holes there, and to change it to not do it just for kitchen was cost prohibitive.
