Would like to see pics of the microwave cabinet installed. I found the one onĀ*http://www.ikeafans.com/interiors_and_modifications.htm but would like to see one in a completed kitchen. Also, Susan, on that same page at the bottom is a picture of a 12" tray cabinet and it looks like there is a drawer at the top. I don't see a 12" cab with a drawer in the catalog. Where is this one?
Well, My kitchen isn't totally installed, but the micro cabinet is! Here's a picture. I have VERY little counter space and can't do a microhood over my range. I think it looks okay, but it's DEFINITELY not for everyone! Hope this helps! FYI, Adel Birch cabs, 16" deep micro.
Also, I haven't put the trim to hide the under-counter lights on.
Here's mine also still under construction. I think it's fine, although I agree that not everyone would be satisfied with this look. My micro is also 16" deep.
dede - does your microwave stick out at all? In that picture it looks like it is flush with the cabinet. It also looks like the same microwave that I have (LG / Kenmore)
Yes Jenb, mine sicks out a bit (3-4" I think!). I think it's just the difference of camera angles (I'm straight on, you're at an angle). I don't HATE the look, but I don't LOVE it! I DO love the extra counter space!
It does help. For me the choice is between just having the micro on the counter or putting it on one of those shelves. I am not a fan of having something really built in because my experience with micros is that they break relatively frequently and they are all different dimensions. I wouldn't want to have to choose the next micro two years down the line based on the size of space I have in a tightly built-in cabinet.
I have my microwave inside a tall 24"deep cabinet. I'm not sure how much ventilation a microwave needs, so I always leave the door open when it's running. If you have room for a tall cabinet, then I think this is an excellent way to hide it. I've also seen people install microwaves below counter height, so you might just be able to put it on a shelf in a base cabinet. Just install an outlet in there and you're done. I know it sounds odd to have a microwave that low, but if you have kids, it's great. At least that's what I've heard, having no children myself.

That's exactly what I'm planning on doing, so I'm glad to hear someone else has done it already! We don't use our microwave very often (mostly just to heat up a fozen veggie burger every now and then), so I don't mind having to leave the pantry door open when it's in use.
I'm not a huge microwave user either (I forget it's there). There might be a problem with condensation, so if anyone else has done something similar, I'd love to know. I'm putting in an over the range microwave, and getting rid of this one, but I plan to put a convection oven in its place so that I have a second oven for large parties - without the expense of an actual second oven.
I was planning on putting the microwave in a 30" or 24" base cabinet on the upper shelf (minus the door) that will be in my island. it's lower to the ground so that kids can nuke things if they want to. wait a minute. maybe that's not such a good idea.
