Installing deco strip

I'm trying to figure out the best way to install the deco strip on a straight run of multiple cabinets. The contoured strip is flush with the ceiling and I want to attach it from the top of the cabinet (the IKEA way) rather than through the inside of the cabinet.

But the only way this can be done is to install it on the cabinets on the ground , gang them together and then get a couple people to lift and install the set of cabinets at once.

My DW thinks this is receipe for disaster. Maybe it is. Any other recommendations? I thought about just using the nail gun to put a 1" brad upward through the roof of the cab. I definitely didn't want to see exposed screw heads when looking at the inside roof of the cabs. Maybe if I set the dept of the nailer to deep it won't look too bad. Since they are white, you would see little holes. I guess I could put the whole on the far ends so it's not as visible.

Someone else mentioned installing the deco strip the ceiling first, but that doesn't work for us with our ceilings because they are way out of level and I have 0 to 1/8" variance that I am caulking. So I want the deco strip level with the cabinet.

Any better ideas that I'm missing? Any recommendations?

I'm really sorry but I don't get why you have to gang the cabinets first and then clean and jerk them into place?? I also don't get why the deco strip is problematic- sorry. Can you try again for a slow moderator??

Deco strip is on the top of the wall cabinet and is flush with the ceiling (crown molding'ish). If I put the cabinet up, I can't screw the deco strip on top with only 1" of room. I have to install it first.

When I have more than one cabinet in a row, I don't want to have multiple deco strips, I want one length of deco strip.

I don't want to install through the *inside* top of the cabinet because I don't want to open my cabinet, look up and see screws or nail holes -- but I suppose that might be most logical option. Hence my desire to gang the cabinets, install one length of deco strip on top of all of them (using the IKEA way -- screws on top going down) and do the "clean and jerk" (as you put it).

"Liquid Nails"

If it'll hold crown moldiing up, it will have no trouble holding up your deco strip wedged betwen the ceiling and cab. Especially if you're going to caulk around the gaps along the ceiling edge.

I used it with success in bathrooms for trim.

Yes! A great idea! Tho I have to say that I don't see the top edge of the interior of my high cabinets much. I don't know that you would ever notice the fasteners.

Re: Installing deco strip

I would shy away from trying to lift all of the cabinets at once, no matter how many cabinets and hands you have. It's an accident waiting to happen. You're better off hanging the cabinets one at a time, and installing the length of Deco strip afterwards.

Liquid Nails would work; so would just about any caulk, silicone or latex based.

But Kelly's right - the screw heads aren't that noticeable. You can even hide them - White Out works for white cabinets, DAP's Plastic Wood in "natural" color for birch cabinets. You can also get plastic caps or sticky dots from a woodworking store.

Re: Installing deco strip

You could also affix them with tiny brad nails, they would be even less noticeable than screw heads.

Or you could attach the deco strip to the ceiling instead of the cabinets.

Re: Installing deco strip

Thanks, already went out and bought Liquid Nails. Totally hadn't thought of that. I might put a brad in each corner as well.

Re: Installing deco strip

I have the same problem as you do. Mine is a bit more complicated because I have 3 wall cabinets next to a 24" deep high pull cabinet. So that will create (2) 45 degrees at the high cabinet. I was wondering if the liquid nail solved thae problem, and how far below the ceiling did you install the metal strip to hand the wall cabinets on?
