We're installing cabinets this weekend, and we have several last minute questions.

1. For the dishwasher opening, we have the measurements, but should we make the opening flush, or how much space should we give it?

2. Where the top cabinets are, we have a 7 foot furdown for utility purposes. We'd like the cabinets to be flush with the top. Realizing that the furdown might not be level, is it realistic to try and mount them flush? If so, how far down from the furdown do we need to measure to hang the rail (I've seen 2 1/2 inches some where)? If it's not possible, what are people's thoughts about how much lower we should mount the cabs?

I'm sure we'll have more questions over the next day or so. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm...regarding the dishwasher opening: I think we just left the standard 24", but I could be wrong. On this thread, it looks like we have about1/2" on the right, but we covered it with some trim.... Just to be sure, measure your actual dishwasher or check the spec sheet (most are available online). Worst case scenario: there will be some flanges on the sides that you'll be able to screw into your adjacent cabinets/panels to cover any gaps. If you're afraid of getting it wrong, leave an additional 1/4" on either side to allow for any inconsistencies.

For your furdown (this is the same as a soffit?): I think the measurement is 2 1/2". Find the LOWEST spot on your furdown, and measure 2 1/2" down from there. You should be safe to hang the cabinets at that level, then you'll fill any gap withcaulk, just make sure it's flexible. To be on the safe side, you could mount them down about 4-5 inches and cover any gaps with trim...either a decorative crown moulding, or just a "library moulding", which is basically a fancy name for a flat peice of wood.

What's your flavor, btw?

Susan

Most dishwashers are 23 7/8" wide, so a 24" opening is standard.

Thanks for the help. The furdown is the same as a soffit. We installed those today without problem. It was 99% level and worked fine. Bottom cabs are tomorrow. We'll go with a 24" opening and hope for the best. And our flavor is Nexus Birch.
