Question I can't snap some hinges shut - what's wrong?

Hi all,

Still working on the kitchen. I'm putting hinges on the doors for the wall & base cabinets. I thought I was so smart because things were moving along nicely. Then I encountered some hinges which I wasn't able to snap shut once I had inserted them into the door. I did a search about this problem and could only find the following advice:

"The hinges should snap into place with little or no effort. Otherwise they are not in the correct position." (or words to that effect).

I'm pretty sure I have the hinge put into the door correctly - the little holes on the hinge line up with the holes on the door. What might I be doing wrong and how do I fix it?

Many thanks!

Re: I can't snap some hinges shut - what's wrong?

I'm not clear on your problem - are you saying the doors don't snap shut, or that you can't push down the little flap on the hinge once you have it installed in the door?

If it's the former issue, you need to do some adjustments using the screws on the throat of the hinge. If it's the latter, first make sure that the flap is up as you insert the hinge. As you insert the hinge, check to see that it's properly seated on the door - the little nipples should fit into the small holes, and the flange of the hinge should lay right on top of the surface of the door. If you have trouble doing this, trying wiggling the hinge back and forth as you press it down - if it still won't go all the way into place, you can use a hammer and screwdriver, properly placed, to persuade the piece to travel the last 1/8" or so. When this is done, the flap should snap shut.

Thanks Chuck for trying to figure out what I meant. The trouble I'm having is with snapping the little flap shut on the hinges. I'll try what you've suggested when I get home from work tonight.
