How hard is it to DIY?

I am just so burned out on contractors (even though I've had unusually good luck with them)...I want complete control but I'm not that good. Could my spouse and I (and a toddler) really install 15 cabinets ourselves? Would it be faster than going through a GC? I just want it DONE and sometimes it's faster to do it yourself. How long does it take if nothing goes wrong?

I'd be so humiliated if I had to call in someone to finish my halffast job...

Where's the sticky thread on "You can do it!"?

Re: How hard is it to DIY?

Hi Malena: I did not DIY my kitchen - I moved appliances, had a new vent installed through the wall of the house, lots of electrical, new gas line - etc ... so way more than I could have ever done myself.

If you're not moving appliances - don't need electrical - and have the time and energy - I think that assembling the cabinets and installing them is very DIY friendly with IKEA. You'll need some tools ... and some patience - but I think its' very do-able.

I'm sure others will be along with opinions ... and more importantly - advice!

Re: How hard is it to DIY?

the cabinet install alone (without moving anything) takes me under a week, and i work alone. another human being is beyond helpful (and an absolute must when talking deep over fridge cabinets).... if you're handy and persistent i say you can do it!

Re: How hard is it to DIY?

DIY : pretty easy. DIY + toddler underfoot: could be tricky! We built and installed 16 cabinets (mostly base) ourselves, cut & installed wooden counters (including stove and sink cutouts), tiled the backsplash, etc.. It took quite a few weekends, BUT...we weren't living on site AND we have a small child underfoot. I would not describe our process as particularly efficient... but it was satisfying!

Re: How hard is it to DIY?

Hmmm....so maybe....

Dulci, is that under a week, working full time?

Are the Akurum cabs similar in installation difficulty to Varde? We put up some of those and it wasn't too bad...but if they didn't work out, we'd have just had some holes in the wall.

I'm scared.

Re: How hard is it to DIY?

that week is a very stretched out week since i'm a mom of 2 young ones (at the time i did my kitchen they were 2 & 4) and I was limited to naptimes and when my dh was around to watch them... again, i do my installs alone.
in that week i did demo, clean up and prep, painting, assembling and install of the wall, base and pantry cabs. oh, and i did my own plumbing (sink, disposer install)... I actually think it was more like 4-5 days, but don't hold me to that...

Study fast! I'm sure you can pass already. I don't think I want to do this....I can't fit that plastic counter into my recycle bin.
