Question 2cm or 3cm Stone Countertops?

With all this talk about installers thinking cabinets will fail under the weight of stone counters it got me thinking. I was planning on using 3cm stone [Silestone or Zodiac I think] as I think the thicker counters look better. Anyway, what is everyone else using? And, if you are using 3cm stone, was there any special prep neccessary for this process or did the counter folks take care of everything? Oh yea, one last thing, is anyone using an oven panel as the end of the run with a stone countertop? I just want to be very sure I will not have any issues [though there is really no turning back now as all the cabinets are in].

Re: 2cm or 3cm Stone Countertops?

I have 3cm granite and a free-standing oven panel at the end of a cabinet run with no issues whatsoever. I have only had this kitchen since April, so I can't say it will last forever, but no issues so far (i've even stood on the countertop, thereby adding 200lbs to the load, with no issues).

Thanks for the reply Slithy. Did you have to add plywood or anything to the tops of the cabinets before the stone could be laid?

With 3cm granite, the stone itself is strong enough without a base of plywood. Once you get into 2cm with a 3cm edge detail, then you need to start to discuss a plywood base (especially since, with fameless cabinets you can't have the granite hang down below the top of the cabinet -- you won't be able to open your doors or drawers...)
