I have installed a set of high cabinets against a wall, with the oven cabinet as the rightmost one. I'm a little worried that the shelf is not going to support an oven that heavy, even if i add those corner brackets that came with the cabinet. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks in advance!

I can't answer your specific question, but due to hardware bag mixups, we never even saw the brackets until after the cabinet was built and we had installed wood cleats instead. Maybe wood cleats would be a better solution? We put cut them to 23 inches deep and then put 5 screws in each. But we have a single oven, so I'm not as concerned as you are.

I contacted IKEA and they said the oven shelf should hold the oven. The lady I spoke said to also add a shelf above the top of the oven so the cabinet is as square as possible so the legs can bear the balance of the weight.

Thanks for the info Sarasea. I couldn't reach anyone at Ikea on the phone -- they're pleasant but unreachable at my Bay Area stores -- you have to go see them in person.

Anyways, I was leery about the shelf too, and my double oven is also 350 lbs (did you get a Monogram convection oven too?).

I did a simple calculation tho. There are six little pins that hold that shelf. Assuming the cabinet is level, and the oven sits flat and even on the shelf, the weight should be evenly distributed across those six pins. 350 / 6 = 58 lbs per pin. Thinking about it that way, it seems much more reasonable that one pin could hold 58 pounds pretty easy.

That calculation, coupled with your input from the Ikea people, and I'm going to just put that heavy SOB right on that shelf, without any additional bracing, since I want a workable drawer underneath, and I don't want any bracing to interfere with the drawer.

FYI, those brackets in the hardware bag are to attach the cabinet face, with the hold cutout for the oven, so if you want to brace the shelf with those brackets, you have to buy some more to attach the face. I'm sure you know that now, tho, since you posted this 5 months ago, and I'm assuming you're enjoying your double oven and it hasn't smacked onto the floor yet

OK, I'm crossing my fingers...

Just to follow up on wall oven questions, the oven we are considering says that the adjacent cabinet must have an adhesion spec of at least 194 degrees temperature rating. I am not really sure what that means, but I think it might be make sure the glue won't melt or ignite next to the oven.

Does anyone have any idea?

It also calls for a load carrying capacity of 275#.

This came up just a little while ago. I think (as you mentioned) it's intended to make sure the laminate glue won't unbond when your oven is running a self cleaning cycle. nobody has ever heard of any problems with IKEA cabs and oven installations adhesion wise, and I'm dead sure that we would have if it was an issue. Pretty much by definition almost every kitchen has either an oven cabinet or a slide in / drop in / freestanding, so it would have come up. Temperature shouldn't be a problem, and your weight should be fine if the cabinet is assembled correctly, see databong's post above .

Databong - it's funny you mention the Monogram oven- I got the double oven with convection model (the newest one they had back in March). I ended up not using the brackets or the oven cut out panel, just the reinforced shelf with the pegs, and everything has held up very well. As an additional stability measure, we did add some 2X4's underneath the length of the entire set of high cabinets in case the legs did not hold, but that was probably not necessary.

Not sure what the dimensions of your oven cabinet are, but if you got the 80 inch cab with the 1 drawer on the bottom and 15 inch doors on top (i can't find it on the ikea site right now),you may want to keep in mind is that oncethe double oven is installed, you will have about a3-5 inch gap between the top of the oven and the bottom of the doors. I ended upremoving the doorson top andusing the space above as a two level bookcasefor my cookbooks to avoid the awkward gap (cutting five inches of a big cover panel seemed ridiculous and uglyto me). Another option wouldbe to install the oven a few pegs above the bottom drawer to allow for two drawers at the bottom. Sounds confusing, but I'm sure you'll be able to do the correct measurements.

As for the self cleaning cycle - I have not used it yet because there has not been a need, but I have roasted veggies/meats repeatedly at 450+ degrees for 1 hour or more and have had no issues with peeling laminate, etc.

Enjoy the cabinets and the oven - they are both fantastic!

Sara, if yours is is model ZET1058 I think we got the same oven. I think we should form a club

I got 88" high units, so the top cupboard is 8 inches taller than yours. I just cut out the hole in the oven face plate this morning and hefted the oven into the cabinet with the help of my electrician less than an hour ago. No extra support for the oven shelf -- just the 6 pins.

I have 5 inches of the face plate left above and below the oven between the drawer below and the cabinet above. Now, I haven't put any of the doors on any of the cabinets yet, so I can't tell how it will look, but I kinda like the 5 inch strips of Tidaholm oak framing the oven above and below.

However, your idea of cookbook shelves is quite good, so I'll check that out!

I've never had a double oven before, and my roomies and I are looking forward to making "cake and steak" as we are fond of saying during construction.

K (for Kurt)

PS Oh, I should probably ask you... The GE installation guide says to attach the oven to the cabinet with the "screws provided." However, in all the junk that was stuffed into the oven (my my that's a LOT of racks!), I didn't see any screws anywhere. Do you, by any chance recall where your screws were stored? I could just call GE and spend 30 minutes wading thru automated voice response systems etc., but I've been having such good luck with this forum I thought I'd ask!
