I am installing the pulls on my drawers and on the LAST ONE I made a silly mistake. I have two of those deep drawers and I, for some reason, assumed that they were the same depth. So I made a jig to help me place the holes on the first drawer -- no problem. But then I used the same jig on the second drawer, not realizing that the drawer was about an inch and a half deeper than the first one. As a result, the drilled holes are not centred between the top and the bottom of the drawer front. They are visibly a bit too low. It's not disastrous, I know, but it looks "off" and it bugs me.
So I'm trying to decide whether to try to fill the two holes (each one is about 1/8 inch across) with wood filler and redrill the holes in the right spot. Or would the filled holes look worse than just having misplaced pulls? The drawer is at the bottom so it's not highly visible. But still. My cabinets are Tidaholm.
Does anyone have any advice? I can't be the only person who has ever drilled a hole in the wrong spot.
Even though it is expensive, I would suggest buying new drawerfronts. Unfortunately, you have to buy them as a complete 4-drawer set.
However, it depends on your level of tolerance for it not being perfect. You could try filling it and seeing how it looks. As someone who installs kicthens for paying customers, we just bite the bullet and buy new drawerfronts if we misdrill.
Thanks for the advice, but I am on both a tight budget and timeline (I am leaving town for several months and want to get the kitchen done before I go), so I'm hoping to avoid buying all new drawers. I guess I'll try some wood filler and if it looks horrible, then that will help simplify my decision. I guess I'll try to get some that will match the color of the cabinets. Anyone else have any advice?
If you can match the color, you will probably not even notice the repair. I've been known to redraw grain over a patch to make it blend in even better, so that's an option, too!
THanks Eva! I ran to the harware store, bought three colors of filler and a stain pen. Turns out that one of the fillers was a great match. I really think the repair is unnoticeable. You would notice it if you knew it was there and you really stared, but I'm just not going to tell anybody. Whew! Feeling better!
