open corner shelf, with no wall attachment?

Trying to figure out what to do to finish off an outside corner of a bulkhead.

My design as it stands now, has 2 15" wall cabinets installed up to the corner in question with an open corner shelf finishing off the corner. However, this corner shelf would only be joined between the 2 15" cabinets.

Obviously not the most secure of installations, but is it 'good enough'? And if not this way, how should I address the outside corner? Make one of the 15" cabinets, a 24" and fill the gaps?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: open corner shelf, with no wall attachment?

Do the corner units use the same joiner screws that the other upper cabs use? If they do, I should think that would be quite secure. And maybe find another spot to display your historic iron or decorative dumbell collection...

Re: open corner shelf, with no wall attachment?

A few questions:
* Are you including a dishwahser in there? I don't see one, but could be wrong.

* Are you putting a coverpanel on the end base cabinet that's below the corner in question? What is "behind" the corner base cabinet, between that cabinet and the next bank of cab's?

* How 'bout foregoing the cabinets over there (in the corner in question) and putting in a pantry instead, then bringing out cabinets in an "L" shape over by what I presume will be your sink?

I agree with WrenX, if you use the appropriate screws to mount the corner piece, that should be sufficient to hold it. If you're really concerned, you could always mount the neighboring cab's to the wall even more securely. That being said, I still wouldn't put anything TOO heavy in the corner.

Re: open corner shelf, with no wall attachment?

JimGo,

no dishwasher in the plan design. My wife and I have lived in 3 different places together, and we've actually never used the dishwasher.

Yes, there will be a cover panel, or maybe a false door. Theres a bulkhead(stairs to basement behind it) behind the base cabinet and next bank of cabinets. Can't do anything with that.

We thought of a pantry, but its a little cramped, we want to keep it 'airy' since the 'window' on the opposite wall to the sink is a breakfast bar. Also, more counterspace was the most important element of the new design. Right now the fridge is in the area beside the bulkhead where the open corner shelf will go.
