Opinions needed- subway or big tiles? - Choosing a backsplash is like taking a ride in a Dr. Seuss-like Backsplooziesplat! All who enter here are sure to leave with more ideas than thought possible..
I have the backsplash elements mostly lined up- we're using the same marble tile with 3" of glass pebbles. Our counters are too high and our cabinets are too low, resulting in a 15" backsplash- we should have demo'd the soffit and used 39" boxes, but too late now. The question though, is whether to use the tile in 12x9, liner, 12x3 or whether to cut them into 3x6 in a running block subway style. I'm leaning towards the running block, but concerned because we're combining subways, glass, pebbles and recycled in one area- can we say trendy boys and girls?
This is the marble (pre-grout). It's a little bit darker/more warm taupe in real life.
The tile stores that carry the lines we're looking at have inconvenient hours, so we're currently considering the Tangerine and Rose Quartz riverstones, or something from the agates (whatever looks best in real life- I know how messed up the colors on my monitor are) for the middle piece.
Here's a link to the colors in the other line- they're not saved as one image, and again, until I can see them in person I have no idea which one will really go. Interstyle Ceramic & Glass Tile - Agates
And all of that just to ask- cut the tiles and do a running pattern, or just do big blocks?
I really really think you should cut the tiles down for the backsplash. It will make it look different from the counter and add interest. The extra work will be so worth it.
I would definitely go for something much different than the countertop, so no large tiles for sure. I'd love to see something that goes vertically, though, since you've got a bit of a space squash it might help visually add more height. I am also fond of the agates as an entire backsplash, since it looks so much like what I did with mine! I like the contrast of square on the countertop and irregular on the backsplash, it will break up the space nicely as well.
ARRRRGH!!!! So we went to the tile store (Monday is the only night they're open late). The lady there was so great- we left ready to hand over some cash. At her insistence, we took the sample boards home just to make sure it looked ok with our lights and in natural light. We have the Agates and the River Crystals.
And they don't work. I guess I could live with one combo, but this is too much work (and cash!) for something I guess I could live with!! Crap! Where's the pouting smiley when you need it?!
sorry that the sample boards you took home didn't work ... but ... be glad that you found that out before you purchased and had the tile at home. It really is important to see the samples and your choices all together in the lighting of your house. I hope you'll find something else that you love!

I can totally relate to the wonderful feeling of being done making those decisions!! I had a terrible time making a decision on my countertops - seriously I must have brought home 100+ samples of material for the countertops ... and just couldn't decide - nothing was quite right ....
I hope you'll find something that you and your DH can both agree to and that you'll both love ... good things are worth waiting for.

We're almost done- we decided on the marble cut into subways with a blue green slate runner (found a small subway with a great color, we're thinking we'll do 3x3 squares)- our floor is a porcelain slate look, and it pulls the floor and the walls in perfectly.
