Size of backsplash?
How much space is there typically between the countertop and the bottom of the cabinets? My current kitchen is around 17.5" to 18". Is that average? Just trying to figure out the sq. ft. of tile I need for the backsplash.

18" is standard, I believe. Usually you don't see much more than that as it would be hard for the vertically-challenged to reach the uppers...

I have seen the space as small as 14" in low ceiling situations.

We have 20" on wall and 22.5" on another and both work well for me (I'm 5'4") although I do need a step stool to reach the very tops of our cabinets but I've yet to be in a kitchen where that hasn't been the case.
