Well, everything has nearly come together, finally, but our new kitchen still needs a backsplash. Cost is a concern at this point, we've paid for all the appliances and countertop and everything and are now feeling quite poor. The area needing backsplash is about 24 sq. ft. on one side of the kitchen (the one in the pic) and 6 sq. ft on the other side, on the wall behind the counter above the oven. I'd like to keep the cost under or around $10-$12 per sq. ft, I'll be doing the installation myself. We like the look of subway tiles quite a bit, we were thinking of doing it with mostly white tiles with a few black or colored ones strewn about semi-randomly to break it up a bit and go with the kitchen's other colors.
The kitchen floor is white tile (1' squares), cabinets are Adel MB, countertop is Obsidian (black) Paperstone, and the walls are a yellow-orange color, it's pretty well represented in the pic. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears! Thanks.
have no idea how much they cost, but you can buy sheets of stainless steel. might be too much stainless though, but it might look kinda neat to run those hanging systems from IKEA that you can hang utensils, etc. from.
Go with the white subway tile. It is the cheapest tile but such a classic and super easy to DIY install. We got ours off the shelf from Home Depot for a ridiculously low price (I think $15 for a box that covers 10 square feet).
Personally, I like all white and not random colors but that is up to you. Your kitchen is looking great!
It looks like that area of your kitchen is fairly tight with everything in there. I think that subway tiles would give the illusion of more space as it draws the eyes to their horizontal surface. I was thinking a simple white with some very light gray's in it.
BTW, how are you liking the Paperstone? It looks like it's getting pretty good use already. I have 2 4x10' Slate color slabs sitting in the garage awaiting the install.

Reason: change picture slightly.

Yeah, the entire kitchen is only 9 x 13 (x 7.5 foot ceiling, ugh), so anything that makes the space seem bigger is worth looking into. Thanks.

So far I like the Paperstone a lot, I routinely boil water and set the kettle down on the counter with no effect. Cutting holes in it for the sink and cooktop was quite a workout, though.
I think I would go with the stainless. I can't tel lhow high your cabs are off the counter but Ikea has a 36 x 24 inch stainless backsplash; you could use multiple ones straight across.
Before tiling it in white I would at least paint the backsplash area white first to make sure you like the color combo. You have so much warmth in the MB and yellow walls that I think a white backsplash is a little jarring.
If you're liking the yellow walls, can you find tile to match? I'm thinking painting the backsplash area the same yellow and covering it with clear glass is too pricey, and finding a subway tile to exactly match perhaps too difficult. What about a mosaic pattern that incorporates the yellow, even in a small way? Maybe blacks and browns (and whites if you want to tie in the floor) and the yellow?
I saw a high-end kitchen where they used a glass backsplash with wallpaper behind it. You would have never known it was wallpaper!!! It was stunning! There are so many different styles of wallpaper that the choices are endless. It would be easy to keep clean, and perhaps you could find something that would coordinate with your paint color. You said your floors were white. Perhaps a wallpaper that incorporates a little white with the other colors would work.
