Please help- kitchen done and can't decide on backsplash!
We finished our kitchen weeks ago, but it just doesn't look finished w/o a backsplash. Cabinets are Stat, except for the one glass unit that is lidingo. Counters are santa cecilia light granite. As you can see from photos the walls are a dark cream and the floors are lightish honey-colored wood. I had my heart set on subway tile in brown but can't find it for less than $14/sf. The only inexpensive subway tile is pure white and I just don't know if it would look good with the counter. I only need 20sf max, and am open to other ideas. Please feel free to suggest anything! (The ss imperative backsplash behind range) is just screwed to the wall and at $18 I am willing to part with it)

Have you considered glass tile? You have a beautiful painting on the wall opposite your kitchen and bringing some of those colors in with a glass mosaic would be stunning. Kathy (kmcg) did a combo of white square tile set on the diagonal with a couple of rows of red glass tile (to complement her fabulous Aga Cooker) with her Lidingo/Santa Cecilia combo, and it is absolutely gorgeous...even more beautiful in person than in the pictures. Her tiles are from Hakatai, and you can select any combination of colors you like and they'll make it for you...cheap, too! I've used Hakatai glass in my bathroom so I can vouch for their business.
Here's an idea of how a ginger-tone glass would look with the granite

Eva - I agree - that combination of white with the ginger would be stunning!!
cecfconsult - your kitchen looks lovely - and will be even better with a backsplash ... a backsplash adds sooo much to a kitchen!

Check out our subway tile at AnchorBayTile.com. There are plenty of subway tile options for less than $14 like the Soho, Cardiff (crackle glaze), Claypads and Solana. You should be able to find what you need there.

Re: Please help- kitchen done and can't decide on backsplash!
Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it. I love the glass tile, but need to keep it under $5/sf . The 4x8 subway tile is nice too, but I'm worried that a 4x8 is too big for the space. Now you can see why I haven't made a decision yet!!! Is there any size/type of tile that would be more "forgiving" if we aren't able to hire a professional installer? Would a mosaic of small tiles be the way to go? Thanks in advance!!! -Pia
Re: Please help- kitchen done and can't decide on backsplash!
I always tell people that the bigger the tile is the bigger the room will feel. Maybe the 4x8 wouldn't be so bad!
I also recommand getting samples to get a better feeling....you may end up with a bunch of them, but it will help you narrow it down some more!
Kathy
P.s.: Mosaic glass tile is not cheap, usually starts around $10/ sq.ft. at least online
