I originally had drawn my hood as a chimney style, with a stainless sheet behind the range that went all the way to the ceiling, with ceramic tile going up the sides. I was thinking that the big problem I have now is grease everywhere and I want it really easy to scrub down. Like this:
But in the appliance store yesterday the sales guy (whose wife is a kitchen designer) was surprised that I didn't have the stainless stop at the hood, with a painted wall above. He said, "Well if you're going to take the stainless all the way to the ceiling, why not get one of the wide hoods? So I drew it out both ways. Here it is with the stainless going only as far as the hood. In this case I drew the ceramic as going up the same amount, but possibly the ceramic should stop just at cabinet height, just like it does around to the left next to the door.
And then lastly, I drew it out with the big hood. But I'm thinking that something this massive overpowers this little kitchen. The entire wall is only 10' wide and the range & hood are 36".
I like the original plan, with the stainless/tile going all the way up. It's clean, flows well and makes the whole range/hood/wall the focal point. The others feel choppy and distracting, and don't focus on the vertical of the hood.
I too like the first of the ones you've shown., My second choice would be to use stainless steel only below the hood, and all tile above.
As something almost competely different, if you ran the upper cabinets all the way in to the hood, the full-width hood doesn't seem so over-powering,
IMHO

I like the first, too! In fact, I've been trying to make a similar decision for my own stove .Insted of stainless steel, we'reusing the laminate sheets that match our counter,
w
/ paint in an accent color for the rest. (We might put up tile sometime in the future, but the laminate stuff is easy and budget friendly for now)
Anyway, your beautiful illustrations have just helped me make my decision and I vote for you to trust your first intinct and run the SS all the way up.
W definition
W is a wall cabinet designation, as in W18, can be a stand-in for Wide, or when followed by a / stands for With.
Kate, I think your first illustration looks great - and the best of the bunch. Functionally, you don't need the stainless and tile above the hood, but I doubt the cost difference is worth worrying about.
If you do stop the stainless at the hood, I like the version where you ran tile the same height as the stainless - it looks more like a coherent design.
NYChome: ask about ratings for the laminate sheets before you order them. They come in different grades/ thicknesses for use on horizontal or vertical surfaces. They also may not be rated for going behind a source of heat, such as a stove.
