glass tile backsplash, dark grout or neutral grout?
so we are nearing the end of major construction in our latest kitchen project, a small condo kitchen - adel med brown cabinets, Eos countertops, brazillian koa flooring is on order and we've placed the order for our glass tile backsplash which will cover 9/10ths of the wall surfaces in the room... with the dk brown of the cabinets and the chocolate color of the walls that are not backsplashed we were thinking of going with a darker than usual grout to pick up on that color - so the grout becomes part of the design rather than fading away... but we've also considered a neural grout that *disappears*...
i thought the mintyness of the greens in the glass tile went well with the chocolate of the grout and wall and cabinets, but maybe i'm wrong and it'll look too much like a *net* if done that way.
i plan to do some tests with dry grout powder on the tiles when i get them delivered... but interested in any experiences where people may have gone darker than what the guidelines seem to suggest and whether or not they were happy with the outcome.
attached are some pics of the neutral gray that blends and the darker chocolate that stands out. also come pics of the semi-complete kitchen, you can see the tile samples up against the chocolate paint behind the cooktop...

I love your tile and your kitchen! I think that the dark grout would look best..it seems to make the tile "pop"! The gray just doesn't seem to relate to anything in the kitchen for some reason.

thank you, the major work is done but so much little stuff left to do - trim around doorways, replacing the bifold louvered doors with french doors that match the cabinets, flooring and toekicks, etc.

Believe me I know, we just did our backsplash this weekend, still need to grout the floor, finish plumbing the sinks, put all of the electrical plates on, hang the range hood over the island, put up the pendant lamp over the sink, caulk all over the place, install trim, do some more painting, install the dishwasher and refrigerator, and on and on and on. We have not used the kitchen at all except to warm up coffee in the microwave. I want a kitchen back!!! LOL

Re: glass tile backsplash, dark grout or neutral grout?
we did 90% of the work ourselves, we had to use licensed electricians and plumbers for connection work since the condo assoc requires these sorts of things.
we've been without dishwasher, disposal and running water in kitchen for 3 weeks now and will have to wait until a week from wednesday to finish final water-related connections since the condo assoc will only turn off water to the building 2x a month - doing it ourselves saved a ton of money, but took us alot longer working nights after work and such...
the saving grace is that we got the oven and microwave working right away, and our espresso machine works!

Re: glass tile backsplash, dark grout or neutral grout?
can you post some daylight photos? it's just that i'm not seeing how those greens fit in with the med brown cabs (they look orange in the photos) and chocolate walls. i do love the "minty green" with the chocolate, but the cabs are saying pale sage to me, not a combo of greens.
i know my opinion doesn't count, but that lighting is really throwing me.

Re: glass tile backsplash, dark grout or neutral grout?
no daylight photo, kitchen has no window!
the cabs are adel medium brown, we only have the wall behind the cooktop painted right now and that's "chocolate curl" from sherwin williams.
i'll try for some other pics this week.... we've sampled the tile already and had a few sample squares done so we're pretty confident with the tile colors - im just struggling with envisioning the grout effect, torn between neutral grout that disappears and allows the tiles to shine or grout that becomes part of the design itself... i know its been done both ways with success, just not sure which way i will like better yet (this may be easier for me to envision when the tile order arrives and i can play around in realtime with some grout colors and do some home tests)...
i did the best i could with the tile designer on susan jablon but the grout picker function doesn't truly give you a great idea of what the final product will actually look like.

Re: glass tile backsplash, dark grout or neutral grout?
Hi, I am Adriana with Mineral Tiles. I have seen many beautiful glass mosaic tiles look totally different after grouted, especially translucent glass tile. The grout can make the tile look either darker or lighter than it was prior to installation. I point a few things to consider before choosing a grout color for your glass tile:
1) If you choose a mosaic tile such as 1x1, 2x2 or 1x2 - these are the most popular sizes, understand that you are going to have a considered amount of grout, so make sure you pick the right color.
2) After you have selected the color and size, think about the color you want your backsplash to be turned in to: Same as the glass tile, a little bit lighter, or darker?
3) Choosing a grout in the same color of your glass tile, it will make the project look darker.
4) Using a grout in the same color family, but a little bit lighter, it will most likely blend into it. You will be able to see the grout lines, but not too strong.
4) Using a white grout, it will make the project look lighter and the color(s) of the tile or mosaic will be more exposed. Be careful with "snow white" or "bright white" type of grouts since they can make the color of the tile "disappear".
Off white works really well with glass tiles.
I hope this helps you.

Re: glass tile backsplash, dark grout or neutral grout?
Not sure if you're already done this project (it's been a few years ), but why not use the same tin as you have on your ceiling for your backsplash? Could be a nice echo and would also minimize the number of colours in the space.
