My first post on this site--I've been lurking for a while and see how helpful and considerate you all are--what a pleasure! I'm getting ready to start my kitchen remodel (Adel birch) and I'm trying to figure out the backsplash question. My stove is located immediately next to the wall (who's brilliant idea was THAT?? ), and unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to change its position at this time. The current backsplash is 30-year-old 2" tile (pale beige-green with an AVOCADO GREEN edge ) and so MUST be changed asap-- . But with what? I need to be able to install it myself and I'd like to not spend huge amounts of money. It needs to be cleanable, since it is barely a couple of inches from the stove, and it needs to be heat resistant. What I'd really love is to just paint it with high gloss paint for ease of cleaning and be done, but is that safe with the heat and say, the possibility of flare-ups/grease fire, etc.?? What about metal/tin ceiling tiles? I love the look, but would they be safe to use next to the stove? If they were painted?
Any input will be most welcome. Thanks in advance!
Hi, Timaran, and welcome! Sounds like you're not too into the idea of retiling, so I won't suggest that route. I think that paint would work fine behind the stove. Do you have a regular residential stove or a high heat commercial one? Also, is it slide in or drop in (that is, does it have it's own built in backsplash for a few inches)?
I can tell you that I have the tin ceiling tiles and they hold up fine behind the stove. I've had no problems whatsoever. Easy to put up and clean up beautifully. But mine are copper, not painted.
One more option is to paint everwhere and just do a stainless panel or the tin tiles only behind the stove.
Thanks for the reply. To clarify, the stove is in a corner, right next to the side wall. I'm not too worried about behind the stove, but the wall to the side of the stove is literally just a couple of inches from the burners. Hence my concerns regarding heat/fire resistance. Re-tiling is an option, but I'd like to explore other possibilities also.
My stove is a regular residential smooth top range, with the control panel at the back (e.g., the "backsplash"). Do you think that the tin ceiling tiles would be safe to use on the side wall right next to the heat?

Have you seen Lisa's Arlig kitchen?
She had to work around a similiar kitchen challenge and this is what she did:
Re: My first post and it's a Backsplooziesplat!
I don't recall what material she placed around the stove to protect the wall but I think it looks pretty fantastic - tempered glass panels perhaps? Something to at least toss around as an option . . .
Thanks! Wow, that does look great, and that's exactly the situation that I have. I wonder what material she used and how she likes it, now that she's been using it for a while.
Ah, got it. I somehow missed that it was right next to the wall. The tin ceiling tiles I got were actual metal, so I bet they'd hold up okay. I know they sell some plastic ones at Home Depot, so I wouldn't go with those. I think I have some extra pieces of the copper toned in my basement. If you'd like, I can send you a little piece and you can toss it near the flame and see what happens!
Looks like it's tempered glass to me, and the one that's in the Home Organization section at that; it sold as a dry erase board. The mounting holes are through the glass itself (and covered with plastic caps), so there's no frame or any additional items needed for mounting.
Hi, and welcome! If you do a search through the forums, you will find Lisa's kitchen, and she did give a list of materials she used. I'm pretty sure they were Imperativ shelf panels, but not positive.
Thanks for the responses, guys. Kristen, is it okay to ask where you got your tin ceiling tiles from? My local jurisdiction just confirmed that they have no code requirements for this other than that it has to be non-combustible which rules out a simply painted surface. So, gotta cover it up with something!
Sure. I got it at American Tin Ceiling Company: Tin Ceiling Panels and Products. It was only $5 a square foot or so, which was fairly reasonable, I thought. If you go that route, I strongly suggest you order one of their sample packs first to see the colors in the family you're thinking of. We changed our minds once we saw them in real life. It's been up for over a year and we still love it and get lots of compliments on it.
