I've looked at a ton of different tiles for backsplash, and I keep coming back to some type of deep red (brick) - we're doing with Adel white cabinets, a lighter colored countertop, so I feel like we'd be ok with a darker backsplash. I found an unglazed 3/4" square porcelain tile I liked on mosaictilesupplies.com, but then I came across these photos:
I never thought I'd like a brick backsplash, much less a Z brick backsplash, but I think it looks nice here. I wouldn't use it anywhere but the backsplash (< 25 feet total), and I think it would fit in with the more traditional touches I'm trying to do in the kitchen... Am I crazy? Every post I've seen about Z Brick involves people trying to get rid of it, and I'm thinking about putting it up.
Also, we're not planning to move right away, but perhaps in the next five years. I don't want potential buyers to run screaming from my kitchen because there's Z Brick in it.
My take on this ... you'll be living there ... so do what you want .. if you're really liking the brick - go for it!! I personally don't think a potential buyer is going to make their final decision on the house just because of a backsplash ... that said - if you were going to sell the house imminently - my opinion would be different.
You're living in the house ... 5 years has a tendency to turn into even more than 5 ... put something in there you will love ... and then see what happens if and when you decide to sell the house.

I think the kitchen with the brick looks really nice. However, I recall at one time when we were house hunting we came across a house with brick backsplash and it was a real turn-off for me. Then, of course, it was just a really bad kitchen, too!!!
Have you checked into the maintenance factor? (i.e., keeping it clean, etc.)
Here's a link to a traditional kitchen that I think is beautiful with "some" red in the backsplash.
Laurie - really good point on the maintenance/cleaning issue. I'll need to look into that.
The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning against it. I don't want the kitchen to look like it's stuck in the 1970s, even with more modern updates. Back to the drawing board!
Maggi105,
Somewhere, maybe in these forums, I saw a wonderful backsplash in a red subway type of tile. It was spectacular and not the least bit dated. Maybe if you want the feel and color of red brick without being dated, something like that would be worth considering.
I tried to look for that kitchen picture but could not find it - maybe someone else can locate it.
I did a search in the forums and came across this blog. The final kitchen pics. aren't posted yet, but they have used red tile for their backsplash if you would like to check it out:
Laurie,
That is the kitchen I was thinking of! Although I am not a "red" person, I thought that kitchen was beautiful and the tile is a wonderful update on red brick. I even looked up the line of tile for my backsplash - and they do have some nice blues. If the marble I already have does not work out, I may have to splurge on this tile.
Dang! I just looked it up - NYFlicka said it was the Radiant series by Mirage Tile - and it is no longer listed on their web site.
