I'm going for a light country kitchen (simple but not cluttered). I think I'm going to go with the Stat cabinets and Numerar birch counter. My baseboard & other trim will be white (maybe to match Stat?). Wall colour will probably be a creamy yellow or light taupe. We're considering cork flooring but may go with laminate.
My husband thinks we should just leave the backsplash painted the same as the walls. I am concerned about the area by the sink & stove. I was thinking SS but am concerned about cleaning (or my lack thereof). I think glass would look nice but again the cleaning! I am not a fan of tile or rather the grout. Maybe a painted tile look? Any other ideas?
would beadboard or narrow-tongue-and-grove paneling be too "country" for your country kitchen? You could paint it with really scrubbable high-gloss enamel, or stain and urethane the heck out of it.
I'm doing the same thing (Stat white and wood counters) and I plan on using a roll of imitation pressed tin for the backsplash. Check it out: Ceiling Tiles By Us. The only thing different is that I can't use this right behind the stove (I'm afraid it will melt or burn) so I'm not sure what to put there yet. I like the pressed tin idea because it should be easy to clean and the texture and color combinations won't show stains or dirt much.
Well, it's a smaller area, so perhaps you could choose a more expensive accent there, such as a hand-painted tile? It's very common to accent the sink or range area that way and I think it looks very nice.
I used beadboard as a backsplash and end panel in my first kitchen and it looked quite nice- yellow painted cabinets and white beadboard backsplash with a green granite look laminate countertop. It was tiny, so if the backsplash got dingy, I wasn't worried about a new coat of white paint.
I love beadboard backsplashes, but I do think it would be too many vertical lines to do one with the Stat cabinets. The tin ceiling would look really great, too. I know the imitation stuff on a roll is a little easier to install, but real metal is not that difficult to install and can handle the heat behind the stove.
Or you could just put a piece of tempered glass behind the stove. The Kludd memoboard is perfectly size for behind a 30" range. No grout, just a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that lets the wall paint color show through.
do you think the painted beadboard would be too much vertical with the Stat cupboards? Would you paint it the same as the walls or something else?
Vertical stripes are slimming. Your kitchen will look 10 lbs thinner overnight.
But seriously, if it were me, I would probably go for a stained effect (with my 2nd choice being a shade of paint one or two shades darker than the wall color, which I think would be a nice tone-on-tone effect.
I've been refinishing some furniture lately and am just falling in love with the shimmery look of natural wood grain under a glossy finish. I saw this

while I was googling around about beadboard backsplashes (I didn't want to suggest it if it's a horrible idea)--isn't this gorgeous?
We've got the stat cabinets, maple countertops, wood floor (though not in the photos), and a sage green paint (though not much of it), and we went with copper tin ceiling tiles. Here's some pics:
If you wanted to go with a stained or varnished wood beadboard backsplash (or anywhere else), you might look at Home Depot. I have to pick out my trim for my house this weekend and was browsing there when I was surprised to find oak, cherry, maple and hickory panels with a top rail. You get an 8 foot section, 36" tall, so if you cut it in half, you would have 16 feet of 18" tall backsplash! The price ranges from $80 to $150 per panel, which is not bad.
