I can't remember how I found this website, but I did, and I think I really like one backsplash idea I found. It's a combination of octagon and subway tiles, both of which were pretty common in 1920's kitchens. That's the look I am kinda going for. Click on the link below and look at selection R 15: http://www.montereyceramictile.com/c...tion/index.htm
It's white with black and pink. I'd be looking at a slightly different color combination, but the pattern looks very intriguing. I'd love opinions, and in the meantime, everyone browse the rest of the site for ideas!
Wow! That's a great source for tiles! Some really neat stuff there. Thanks for posting Emmie. We'll have to add it to the sources thread.

I have an email in to them asking for pricing. I'll let you know how they sound when I get the information back. If they are expensive, well...we can still snag ideas and dream!
Or, you could use a choice few and mix them with an inexpensive field tile. They really have a fabulous selection.

That's very true, Susan. I'm going to ahve to look at some more of the specialty tiles and see what their prices are. However, here are the prices on the tile I originally liked. (Any opinions on pricing, please tell me, I have NO idea what is reasonable!)
3"x3" Hexagon $21.00SF + Shipping and Handling Sold by full box only 10SF
3"x6" Subway $11.95SF + Shipping and Handling Sold by full box only 10SF
Emmie -- Those prices don't look TOO bad. Depends of course on the size of the space you have to cover.
Here's what (I think) I know: I think you can get some machine made subways (basic colors, no fancy edges or glazes) at HD/Lowes for between $4-$8 sq. ft. where most stuff at Ann Sacks and the like is $30 sq. ft. and up. Way up. Crackle tiles are expensive as are hand-crafted tiles of any stripe. So, $12 a sq. ft. is right about mid-line. Do they sell through dealers? You might be able to get lesser amounts and/or a discount through a local source.
I know nothing of hex tiles, but $21 sq. ft. seems steep. The others, I just don't have any frame of reference for. Hope that helps!

Thanks, Laurie! Behind the stove is what I'm thinking, at least for the hex tile. I'm pretty certain I will go with subway tile for the rest of the room, although I'm still thinking it over. It could be neat to do subway tile with a row of hexagons on top, and then "expand" the hexagon row to fill the area behind the stove.
Susan: Thanks for the head's up about the price. I can get the subway tile for the price you mentioned, or perhaps even less. The hexagons might be something I can get for less locally. I don't want to pay shipping from Los Angeles unless Ihave to!I know I could get the trim tiles for less as well, and I'm not sure I need "all" of the trim. I'm not sold on the rope. It looks "heavy" to me.
Does anyone have a backsplash planner program? Is there any such THING a backsplash planner program? Drawing this may frustrate me, and I can't buy tile to play with on the dining room table unless I'm sure I want to eventually put it onto the wall.
