Hello all - 1st time poster (but certainly not the last!)
Visited the ikea website & our local (
Frisco
) store today & I wasn't so hot on the choices for cabinets to go into a potential bathroom remodel. I did really like a few of the kitchen cabinets, however.
Does anyone have experience in buying cabinets from the kitchen section & adding sinks & faucets, etc? Is it just a size thing, or is there more that I have to think about?
welcome to the fray! and so many of us have come to the same bathroom conclusions
kitchen cabs are quite a bit deeper, but if your bathroom has the clearance then you're golden. if not you can just trim some of the cabinet to make it less deep ( 3 1/2" of dead space at the back of drawers, 2 1/2 with the dampener... but there is even a solution around that)
I agree with Dulci about the size thing, that whether they will look right depends on the size of the room. Another thing to consider is that they're taller than "standard" vanity height in unmodified form. It's as easy change this, but then you'll also need to consider how that affects your options for drawers/doors.
I used kitchen carcasses and doors in my master bath which is ~11" x 12" and we love them for the added storage and countertop space. In our case, I think anything shallower would have looked out of proportion. And I would never in a million years go back to the low-rise "standard" height vanity.
Be sure you check clearances carefully if you're seriously considering this. If it's a remodel and you're not changing the configuration at all, there's a fair chance that deeper carcasses won't fit in standard form because a lot of or even most bathrooms seem to be designed around the "standard" depth vanity and because of door clearance issues or whatever those extra inches in depth just aren't there. This is especially true of older homes.
i used kitchen cabinets for my bathroom vanity, and i love them. i left them the same height and depth, without modifying the size, and we put on custom countertops. one thing to consider -- you may want to be sure you template the sink and faucets closer to the front edge of the countertop -- see how many inches back from the front a usual vanity sink is. my countertop guy went for balance and centering it, and i have to lean a little more than usual to be over the sink. a small thing, but i wish i had thought about the different proportions when we templated.
good point greenie! funny thing about one of mine, it's a 30" wide and i had the sink pulled forward and centered, the plumber accidentally flipped the plywood and the sink wound up quite a bit to the back. big oops!!! thankfully it was not my forever home.
fwiw
, i don't use the legs in the bathroom, i use a 2x4 so that the vanity isn't too high. i like it at about 34-35 finished whereas in the kitchen we like 37ish.
Hi Dulcinea- i just bought some adel white cabinets to use as our master bathroom vanity- I like the idea of the greater depth. How do you use the 2x4s instead of the legs?
I intend to buy a kitchen countertop from the stock at Home Depot or Rona- is there any reason not to use that? I figure it is the right depth, we'll just cut a sink hole and be done.
